Submit The Earth Sciences are the focus of scientific understanding about this and other planets, embracing an enormous range of topics, including the evolution of the solar system, the earth, and life, the nature of planetary interiors, the causes of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, earth-surface processes and the origin and behaviour of oceans and atmosphere. The emphasis of both our teaching and research is on understanding the fundamental principles of geological processes. Theory, measurements, experiments, and observation of natural processes are all essential elements in the Earth Sciences, and students with a strong background in all aspects of the physical sciences are encouraged to join the Department. Oxford is one of the leading centres of geological research in the UK, with a score of 3.2 in the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) research assessment exercise.

Welcome to Earth and Environmental Sciences
Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Open University has an excellent reputation for both teaching and research. The Department made a major contribution to the CEPSAR submission in the 2008 RAE, in which 70% of the science was recognised as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”. Our teaching was also graded “excellent” in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment.
Introduction
The Department was established in 1969 and the founding professor was the late Professor Ian Gass FRS. The Department comprises about 68 staff and 20 full-time PhD students. There is a large and very active undergraduate student society, Open University Geological Society ( OUGS About 4,500 students are studying Earth Science courses this year (equivalent to about 1,600 full-time undergraduates). All undergraduate students study at home by distance learning methods

Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol
Earth Sciences is a truly interdisciplinary subject that seeks to understand the structure and history of our planet, and to predict the future of the Earth, atmosphere and oceans. In both teaching and research, our focus is on the physical processes that formed and now influence the Earth, and on testing hypotheses by observation, experiment and modelling. The quality of our research is recognised internationally, as well as nationally (in 2008 we were ranked in the top 5 UK Earth and Environmental Sciences for research by the Higher Education Funding Council for England). Earth Sciences is part of the University of Bristol's Faculty of Science,

Long Wave UV Light
- This is a great value on a quality UV light. 9 bulb LED flashlight which emits ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 385nm. It is powerful enough to make gems and minerals fluoresce even in normal room lighting . This field tested UV flashlight comes with a professional grade filter to block white (visible) light, which otherwise would make it difficult to see the fluorescence. Many long wave reacting gems such as rubies and diamonds show a strong fluorescence even in bright room lighting.
Reveals special fluorescent markings on recent United States $5 bills! Even some insects, especially scorpions, glow green in darkness when illuminated with UV light. Ready to use with 3 AAA batteries and a nylon case
Forceps
- Plastic, 5 inches long. Features cerrated inside tips and ribbed finger supports. (package of 10)

This towering mass of water and ice shook the ground as it thundered towards the Pacific Ocean, stripping away soils and cutting deep canyons in the bedrock. With flood waters roaring across the landscape at 65 miles per hour, the lake would have drained in as little as 48 hours. Understanding Our Planet Through Chemistry
Understanding Our Planet Through Chemistry
This U.S.Geological Survey site shows how chemists and geologists use analytical chemistry to: determine the age of the Earth; show that an extraterrestrial body collided with the Earth; predict volcanic eruptions; observe atmospheric change over millions of years; and document damage by acid rain and pollution of the Earth's surface.. Compiled by
Joseph E. Taggart, Jr. You have three choices on how you can browse this site:
  • The best choice to browse is the North American Version with inline snapshot size images and hypertext links to desktop (150k and up) .gif figures. This version downloads the index, which contains links to the two dozen chapters. You simply point and click to jump to the chapter in which you are interested. After that you will use a feature to move around the document. While this version can be accessed from any place in the World, the 40k inline images slow it down from outside North America. Canadian Earth Science Teacher Workshop Program Download the EdGEO Flyer My Profile
About EdGEO
EdGEO , initiated in the early 1970s, supports local workshops on earth science for Canadian teachers. It is coordinated by the Canadian Geoscience Education Network of the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences (CFES). EdGEO workshops provide teachers with
enhanced knowledge, classroom resources and increased confidence. Workshops are organized by local geoscientists and teachers. Grants of up to $3000 per workshop are available from the National EdGEO Program.
Statement of Purpose:
By providing educational opportunities for today's teachers and, through them, their students, EdGEO seeks to cultivate a heightened awareness and appreciation of our planet. The expected result is an improved capacity on the part of Canadians to understand the Earth and to make wise decisions, especially with regard to the use of its mineral and energy resources, the maintenance and remediation of the environment, and response to geological hazards.
Here is what teachers are saying about EdGEO workshops:
"Handouts, visuals and discussions have equipped me with the knowledge needed to engage students in the exploration of rocks and minerals"
