Ecological education is also important because studying various ecologies can provide information for solutions to environmental challenges, natural resource problems, and human health issues. Educating people about the Isle Royale ecology, this slideshow presentation on DVD highlights the unique interdependence of wolves and moose on this isolated Lake Superior island. Utilizing ecological education that appeals to both adults and children, Solex Media has created a fascinating ecological DVD that integrates scientific research with memorable photographs of moose and wolves, creatures that people do not often see in the wild.
Ecological education also builds awareness about vital ecosystems and the need for biodiversity. The ecological research and education on Isle Royale brings increased understanding to the processes that affect the birth and death rates of Isle Royale wolves and moose. Education and research on island ecologies like Isle Royale are also special places for ecologists to study, since the isolation tends to simplify the variables involved in their research. This Isle Royale ecological video produced by Solex Media reveals the thrilling world of wolves and moose to educators, students, ecologists, and others. View DVD Cover

New Ecology education guide promotes healthier watersheds; highlights local efforts statewide
OLYMPIA – The newest publication in the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) Environmental Education Guide series explains how the health of people is linked to the health of the watersheds where they live. Watersheds are interconnected systems of land, water, air, and the life they support. Defined by natural boundaries that drain into a stream and its tributaries, the watershed is the logical unit for environmental management. Every Washington resident lives in a watershed, and all have a stake in improving watershed health. The 12-page guide, “Working for Washington’s future: Healthy Watersheds, Healthy People,” describes what watersheds do, explains how people are affecting them, and highlights watershed restoration projects around the state. The brochure serves as a guide for things each of us can do to improve our watershed environment. “The good news is that little things matter: the actions you take affect your watershed, no matter how small. You can start improving the health of your watershed today by doing something as simple as turning off the water when you brush your teeth, or replacing part of your lawn with beautiful native plants that use less water,” said Evan Sheffels, Ecology Director Jay Manning’s special assistant for water policy.

As if the name difference didn't tell us all we needed to know anyway. A couple days ago, the MSM, including FOX News, jumped with this story:

Barry's Response - Seems there is a lot of money in it for the media (and even a little for this one.)

These systems are used to teach biological diversity to undergraduate students. There are more than 15 separate marine and freshwater tanks housed in two adjacent labs. The total number of species maintained probably exceeds 1000 animal, plant and protist species.
Some images of microscopic organisms taken from the EEOB microcosms.

Don't see the image you want? I have an extensive image archive featuring many hard-to-find species of microfauna and protists. For a small fee I can send you specific images or, my entire archive. Since my microcosms contain marine, freshwater and terrestrial species from almost every phylum, I can even create made-to-order images of species representing taxa of your choice. email me for details.

Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability: Diverse People for a Diverse Science
SEEDS is an education program of the Ecological Society of America . Its mission is to diversify and advance the ecology profession through opportunities that stimulate and nurture the interest of underrepresented students to not only participate in ecology, but to lead. Focused mainly at the undergraduate level, with extension services for communities, high schools, graduate students, and international collaborations, the SEEDS program promotes an ecology profession with wide representation to ensure environmental understanding and a sustainable future for all.. The core SEEDS program components offer hands-on, engaging experiences with ecology that exhibit the relevance and applications of the science. Each experience also provides opportunities to interact with a diverse group of ecologists and other motivated students to both broaden and deepen students’ understanding of ecology and potential careers. Make a Donation We invite you to contribute to ESA's SEEDS program and help support and encourage greater diversity in the ecology profession.

Teaching Ecosystem Complexity is building collaboration among local schools, conservation organizations and Long Term Ecological Research sites. Working with HS science teachers, we build their knowledge of ecosystem complexity and understanding of consequences of human activities on ecosystems. We seek teams from nature center sites to receive training in the use of procedures and materials to provide their own teacher training.
