Restoration ecology specifically refers to scientific studies and their name that was first developed in the 1980s.

Land managers, laypeople, and stewards have been practicing restoration for many hundreds, if not thousands of years, yet the scientific field of "restoration ecology" was first identified and coined in the late 1980s by John Aber and William Jordan. The study of restoration ecology has only become a robust and independent scientific discipline over the last two decades.

This applies as well to skylarks and to so many other creatures. A night drive used to be plagued by moths on the windscreen. Not now. Modern farming is not sustainable. Soil is made up of a multitude of physical chemical , and biological entities, with many interactions occurring among them. Soil is a variable mixture of broken and weathered minerals and decaying organic matter. Together with the proper amounts of air and water, it supplies, in part, sustenance for plants as well as mechanical support. The diversity and abundance of soil life exceeds that of any other ecosystem . Plant establishment, competitiveness, and growth is governed largely by the ecology below-ground, so understanding this system is an essential component of plant sciences and terrestrial ecology.

  • Moisture itself becomes a major limiting factor on land. Terrestrial organisms are constantly confronted with the problem of dehydration. Transpiration or evaporation of water from plant surfaces is an energy dissipating process unique to the terrestrial environment.

Between them there exists a strange synergy, whose only purpose seems to be to sustain life to its maximum. Man's intervention, by cutting forests, seeding grassland and planting crops amounts to a major shock to this earthy world. Man's ignorance and unfriendliness towards the soil may lead to his own destruction. Knowing how the soil's ecosystem works, what it needs and how it likes to be treated, could save our soils for posterity. How does soil work? What happens in the soil? How are nutrients recycled in soil? What is the water cycle and how does the water cycle fertilise the soil? What lives in soil? What is the role of fungi? Life is about organic carbon compound, stored in the vegetation and animals, but also in the soil. Soil organisms' energy comes only from the various carbon compounds recycled to the soil. internal cycles The nature of an ecosystem is to recycle the most precious building blocks of life, its nutrients, energy and water. These ecosystems have evolved over eons of time, long before the dawn of Man. The invisible ecosystem of the soil is what makes soil fertile.

    Eurasian Watermilfoil
    General Information
    Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum ) is an attractive plant with feathery underwater foliage. It was once commonly sold as an aquarium plant. Eurasian watermilfoil, hereafter called milfoil, originates from Europe and Asia, but was introduced to North America many years ago and is now found over much of the United States. This plant was introduced to the eastern United States at least as long ago as the 1940s, but it may have arrived as early as the late 1800s. The first known herbarium specimen of milfoil in Washington was collected from Lake Meridian near Seattle in 1965. By the mid 1970s it was also found in Lake Washington. During this same time period milfoil became established in central British Columbia and traveled downstream to Lake Osoyoos and the Okanogan River in central Washington. Now milfoil is found in the Columbia, Okanogan, Snake, and Pend Oreille Rivers and in many nearby lakes. In western Washington, the distribution of milfoil closely follows the Interstate 5 corridor. It is very apparent that milfoil has been spread from lake to lake on boat trailers.
    Growth Habit
    Management
    Once milfoil becomes well-established within a waterbody, it is difficult or impossible to remove. In smaller waterbodies (350 acres or less), we have had some success using an aquatic herbicide called Sonar® to remove milfoil and the selective herbicides 2,4-D and triclopyr-TEA show great promise in managing milfoil infestations. Other control methods include harvesting, rotovation (underwater rototilling), installation of bottom barriers, diver hand pulling, diver dredging, and in some very limited situations the use of triploid (sterile) grass carp. We are investigating other biological controls such as the milfoil weevil. Milfoil management costs the state and private individuals up-to-one million dollars per year.

    Stormwater is rain and snow melt that runs off surfaces such as rooftops, paved streets, highways, and parking lots. As water runs off these surfaces, it can pick up pollution such as: oil, fertilizers, pesticides, soil, trash, and animal waste. From here, the water might flow directly into a local stream, bay, or lake. Or, it may go into a storm drain and continue through storm pipes until it is released untreated into a local waterway. In addition, the large impervious surfaces in urban areas increase the quantity of peak flows of runoff, which in turn cause hydrologic impacts such as scoured streambeds channels, instream sedimentation and loss of habitat. Furthermore, because of the volume of runoff discharges, mass loads of pollutants in stormwater can be significant. Human Health : In general, untreated stormwater is unsafe. It can contain toxic metals, organic compounds, bacteria, and viruses. Untreated stormwater is not safe for people to drink and is not recommended for swimming. Polluted stormwater can lead to beach closures for swimming and shellfish harvesting. It can also trigger toxic algal blooms. Drinking Water : In some areas of Washington, notably Spokane County, and parts of Pierce and Clark counties, gravelly soils allow rapid infiltration of stormwater. Untreated stormwater discharging to the ground could contaminate aquifers that are used for drinking water.
