Grey fox, a member of the dog family Foxes belong to the dog family , which includes wolves, coyotes, grey foxes, raccoon dogs and their relatives. All members of this family are incredibly adaptable animals, and this makes them successful colonisers in many areas of the world practically in all habitats available and often in close proximity to humans. In these pages you can find a wealth of information on fox biology, ecology and behaviour

The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) promotes education and outreach as part of its mission to increase the public understanding of science. NCEAS developed Kids Do Ecology (KDE) in 1997 as the primary component of its outreach to grade school students. Kids do Ecology is both a website and a "Scientist in the Classroom Program " The original focus of the KDE program was the development of the web site to teach elementary school students about ecology, experiments, and use of data. The KDE web is frequently reviewed and recommended, and continues to be heavily used in the United States and abroad. School and library web sites, teachers' organizations, scientific organizations, and many other institutions link to it from their web sites. In order to expand the reach of the site and address the needs of Spanish speaking children here in Santa Barbara, as well as nationally, a newly revised Spanish language version of the site is underway. Introduction
By: Thomas C. O'Keefe, Scott R. Elliott and Robert J. Naiman of the University of Washington and Douglas Norton of the USEPA's Office of Water This training module introduces watershed ecology. Understanding watershed structure and natural processes is crucial to grasping how human activities can degrade or improve the condition of a watershed, including its water quality, its fish and wildlife, its forests and other vegetation, and the quality of community life for people who live there. Knowing these watershed structural and functional characteristics and how people can affect them, sets the stage for effective watershed management. After completing this training, the participant should know the basic biotic and abiotic components of watersheds, the basic natural processes and interrelationships occurring in watersheds, and how watershed structure and functions may vary in time and space. Some background in the life sciences is helpful for comprehending this material, but not required. Goals of this Module To continue the module, click on NEXT

Community ecology, consumer-prey interactions, invasion biology
Research in the Terrestrial Ecology lab focuses on the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms that generate biological diversity and their consequences for ecosystem function. Why are invasive species so dominant? How do human impacts on food webs influence the stability and trajectory of natural communities? To what extent does evolutionary history influence current ecological processes? Current projects include large-scale field experiments examining the effects of vertebrate herbivores on plant communities, exotic plant invasions, and the evolution of plant defenses. Pictured below: Dr. Eric Lind, a new Postdoctoral Fellow in the Terrestrial Ecology lab. Eric is researching tri-trophic interactions among plants, insects, and vertebrate browsers.

Artists are often particularly keen observers and precise recorders of the physical conditions of the natural world. As a result, paintings can be good resources for learning about ecology. Teachers can use this lesson to examine with students the interrelationship of geography, natural resources, and climate and their effects on daily life. It also addresses the roles students can take in caring for the environment. Students will look at paintings that represent cool temperate, warm temperate, and tropical climates. An activity addressing the other climate categories can be found in the Activities section of the lesson. If you enjoy this lesson, there's more! This lesson is one in a series of four which are adapted from the Gallery’s free-loan teaching packet " ." The four lessons share a similar format, but focus on different areas of curriculum. Other topics include origin myths heroes and heroines , and 19th-century America
    • Identify natural resources found in particular geographic areas Discuss ways in which climate, natural resources, and geography affect daily life

This joint NIH-NSF program is currently being competed under an NSF program announcement.
    Purpose
This joint National Institutes of Health (NIH)-National Science Foundation (NSF) initiative supports efforts to understand the underlying ecological and biological mechanisms that govern relationships between human-induced environmental changes and the emergence and transmission of infectious diseases. The highly interdisciplinary research projects funded under this program apply both ecological and biomedical methods, and study how environmental events such as habitat alteration, biological invasion, climate change, and pollution alter the risks of emergence and transmission of viral, parasitic, and bacterial diseases in humans and other animals. Projects are encouraged to consider how integrated environmental and biomedical approaches to infectious diseases may enhance our ability to predict and control them.
