Changes in the Value of Money over time
Historical Background
A frequent question is "how much would a specified amount of money at a certain period of time be worth today?" The sources listed below are useful in attempting to answer this question. Comparisons of purchasing power are only reliable over short periods. A typical computer today is a very different machine from its counterpart of 5 years ago. Indices of inflation fail to take proper account of improvements in quality. Even in the essentials of life there are significant changes over the years. A typical diet in most advanced countries will be rather different today from what it would have been before the refrigerator became a common household item. Furthermore it has been argued that anthropometric measures of well-being , e.g. people's height, are a far better measure of a nation's standard of living than such conventional indicators as gross national product or per capita income. Therefore over long time spans, changes in prices give only the very roughest and most approximate idea of changes in the value of money.

Rome's economic problems of poor management, the dole, and hoarding combined together to escalate financial stress.
The Fall of the Roman Empire, by Peter Heather
Heather's thesis is that the various assaults on Rome had ripple effects. Rome lost territory and revenue, was spread too thin militarily, and the barbarians on the border kept growing stronger. One attack was not enough, but the cumulative effect caused the fall of the western empire

    47. Spindletop
History of the first oil gusher near Beaumont, Texas drilled by Anthony Lucas.
    http://sln.fi.edu/fellows/fellow2/jan99/spindletop.html
    Spindletop
Spindletop is the name of a small knoll just south of Beaumont Texas.
Anthony Lucas, an Austrian-born mining engineer, has been supervising the drilling of an oilwell since October 27, 1900. His crew must install a new drilling bit on the string of a drill pipe. The date is January 10, 1901. The drilling crew begins lowering the new bit to the bottom of the hole. They run about 700 feet (200 meters) of drill pipe into the 1,000-foot (300-meter) hole. Suddenly, the well starts spewing drilling mud. The mud, a liquid concoction that carries rock cuttings out of the hole, drenches the rig floor and shoots up into the derrick. The crew evacuates the rig and waits to see what will happen. The flow stops. The workers return to the rig and start cleaning up. Without warning, mud erupts again. Then a geyser of oil gushes 200 feet (60 meter) above the 60-foot-high (18 meter high) derrick. See the photo to the right. The spouting oil blows all the drill pipe out of the hole. The blowing well elates Lucas and his crew as they watch the display from a safe distance. They estimate that it is flowing over 3 million gallons (over 12,000 cubic meters) of oil per day. In oilfield terms, that's over 80,000 barrels of oil per day. Before Spindletop, a big producer flowed 50 barrels (8 cubic meters )per day. The Lucas well produced 1,600 times that amount. It showed that buried layers of rock could contain tremendous amounts of oil. What is more, it proved that rotary drilling was an effective way to obtain it. Spindletop marked the beginning of the modern petroleum industry.

After careful evaluation of the journal's past policy of unlimited access to both current and archived issues in light of a move to market the journal as an e-journal (as well as a print journal), it was determined that a sliding wall of restricted access to the two most current issues would be instituted. Effective immediately, nonsubscribers will continue to enjoy full access to all files in the archives but will have limited access to current issues of the journal. The exception to this rule is that all scholia content requires a current subscription to the journal. Brazil Economic History includes many economic changes that came in Brazil's economy over a period of time. From the discovery of Brazil (1500) to the 1930s the Brazilian economy depended on the production of primary products and their exports. The colonial rule left a long lasting effect on Brazil's economy and it almost stopped the wheels of development. In the 1930's some important decisions were taken to change Brazil into a semi industrial society. Basically small industries like textile industries began to crop up during this period. Brazilian economy began to stabilize with the abolition of slavery and establishment of republican regime Brazil saw a new phase of development. As per the Brazil Economic History , In the 1950s and 1970s the industrialization process began in Brazil leading to the establishment of many industries like petrochemical, steel, automobile and other significant infrastructure projects. Until 1974 Brazil's GDP was among the highest in world ranking (7.4%). But Brazil was absorbed into excessive liquidity from Japanese, European and U.S. Banks in the 1970s.Between the 1970s and1980s, Brazil had an impressive GDP (8.5%).The per capita income increased to US $ 2,000 in 1980.
In the early half of 1980s Brazil was forced to make economic adjustments due to the increase in the interest rate in the world market. But the economic output continued to grow. In 1990s many economic reforms were undertaken. It includes tax reform, privatization, deregulation, strict fiscal policy, trade liberalization and a structural and legal framework was set up to attract foreign investment. In the Steel and fertilizer sectors privatization process accelerated. Due to the adoption of trade reforms Brazil became an open economy. There were no quantitative restrictions on imports. Most of the Brazilian exports are absorbed by

Taxes are considered a problem by everyone. Not surprisingly, taxation problems date back to earliest recorded history. Historical Tax Terms:
TAX HISTORY CHRONOLOGY EGYPT During the various reins of the Egyptian Pharaohs tax collectors were known as scribes . During one period the scribes imposed a tax on cooking oil. To insure that citizens were not avoiding the cooking oil tax scribes would audit households to insure that appropriate amounts of cooking oil were consumed and that citizens were not using leavings generated by other cooking processes as a substitute for the taxed oil. GREECE In times of war the Athenians imposed a tax referred to as eisphora . No one was exempt from the tax which was used to pay for special wartime expenditures. The Greeks are one of the few societies that were able to rescind the tax once the emergency was over. When additional resources were gained by the war effort the resources were used to refund the tax. Athenians imposed a monthly poll tax on foreigners, people who did not have both an Athenian Mother and Father, of one drachma for men and a half drachma for women. The tax was referred to as

    Economic History
‘Every single piece of economic theory is ultimately a piece of crystallised history. And you have a much deeper and sophisticated form of knowledge if you know the history, the events, the events, what happened ... if you just do the theory, if you just do the crystallised history stuff, there is a sense in which your thought processes are on crack - you're doing the crystal stuff rather than the lines.' ' -Professor Brad DeLong, University of California at Berkley
Photo by Sukanto Debnath on Flickr History is the study of events. It looks at each event in turn, and while it might acknowledge patterns, or similarities (‘history repeating itself') the starting point is always the analysis of the case study, the particular passage of time. Economics is the study of patterns. Economists look for the similarities of different events, and ask whether or not they support a particular economic theory or model. What then, is economic history? Simply put, economic history seeks to try to understand historical events by appealing to our knowledge of economic processes. Many current economic theories are supported by a set of ‘stylised facts' - simple observations based on the real world. But how robust are these stylised facts?
