87. Economic Systems
Through most of the twentieth century, the nations of the world have been divided, and some of their conflict was over their different economic systems.
http://william-king.www.drexel.edu/top/prin/txt/comsysf/cs0.html
Twentieth-Century Economic Systems
Certainly, there is something to be learned from the collapse of the Soviet-type systems, but what? Is the debate over economic systems over, or has it entered a new phase? Only time will tell. What we can do in this chapter is look back over the debates in the 20th century, and review a bit of what economists have learned from them and taught about them. The point of view will be that of neoclassical economics. (The Marxist view of capitalism is discussed in another appendix). Discussions of economic systems have usually focused on the ideal conceptions of the different systems and on the extent to which the ideal might be realized in the actual systems of the different countries. One fallacy we want to avoid is that of comparing the ideal in one case with the actual performance of another. That's not fair and can only lead to confusion. But ideals can be deceptive it is quite possible that one system might be preferable to another, as an ideal, but so difficult to realize in practice that in actual examples, it is worse. We shall have to look both at the ideal, and at the obstacles to realizing that ideal in practice. It is here that we may learn something from the failure of the Soviet-type systems in the 1990's (and perhaps also about the failure of the capitalist systems in the 1930's). The ideal economic systems have played a part in different ideologies and social movements, but the ideal systems are not the same thing as the ideologies and social movements. As economists have conceived them, the ideal systems of the twentieth century have been market capitalism, government-managed capitalism, central planning, market socialism, and labor-management. The last three of these have played some part in socialist thinking, in different times and places, while central planning has also played some part in fascism and, in some countries, capitalism.

The Freetimea Project
Introduction
To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.
Buckminster Fuller This website expresses an attempt to create one of Buckminster Fuller's "new models", that will render existing models obsolete specifically in the realm of social / political / economic systems ( spesystems Would it be useful to have a new spesystem ? Opinions differ. One view holds that everything (at the macro level, the spesystem level) is as it should be, as is best; that all is being well managed by higher, wiser, impeccably benelovent unseen forces, and that we need not worry our pretty little heads about the macro level. For those who hold this view, the spesystems we have now are just fine, and efforts to create a new one are misguided to the extent that the efforts distract from the business of personal spiritual evolution, and will fail in any case since we already have what our managers intend. Another view holds that, both individually and collectively, we are living in a free will zone the choices we make, both individually and collectively, do have effects that can be helpful or not so helpful with respect to spiritual evolution, at both the personal and population levels. Those who hold this view may find the ideas that follow of interest.

Social fiction - S. Flor After the Crash:
S. Flor describes the local markets of the year 2029 which complement the established global market system.
Economic activity is not restricted to the world of Dollar, Yen, Euro or whatever anymore.
It was back in 1987 when I received the first message of S. Flor. Until now I am not sure what is really behind these "reports from the future" - I leave it open whether they are conveyed by means of a time tunnel or it is just a simple fake.
For anyone who believes that the social and ecological challenges of our time will result not only in technological, but also in profound social innovations - this contribution will be exciting news. S. Flor: "Flatlander"

IOWA TRANSPARENCY IOWA VOTES Overton Window A new blockbuster novel by Glenn Beck is named after a think-tank concept, the Overton Window , that helps explain why lawmakers enact the policies they do. This concept, created by Mackinac Center’s late vice president, Joseph Overton, explains that the window of politically acceptable policies is not defined primarily by what politicians would prefer; rather, it is defined by what they believe they can support and still win re-election. Hence, the window shifts to include new policies or exclude old ones not when ideas change among politicians, but when ideas change in the society that elects them. Visit the Mackinac Center’s website for more on the Overton Window concept and the new book by Glenn Beck, and please explore Public Interest Institute’s website to read our contributions to the effort to shift the window to more limited-government, free-market ideas. N EWS AND V IEWS This daily feature points out an article of current interest in the state or nation and allows you to read a view point that was published by Public Interest Institute.

The Arrogance of Corporate Power Is Evident in US Supreme Court Decision
Submitted by George Friday on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 04:16. The U.S. Supreme Court has sided with the ruling elite against the interests of the American people. On Wednesday, January 21st in Citizens United vs. FEC the Supreme Court let regular people; working class, low income and working poor people down yet again. They sided with the corporate elite when they overturned the flimsy federal campaign finance reform laws afforded by the McCain-Feingold law, freeing up corporations to open the floodgates and buy elections since they can now spend unlimited money in our elections. The Court has legalized corporate bribery of our elected officials.

The Aim of Liberal Democrat Action for Land Taxation and Economic Reform (ALTER): "To improve the understanding of and support for Land Value Taxation amongst members of the Liberal Democrats; to encourage all Liberal Democrats to promote and campaign for this policy as part of a more sustainable and just resource based economic system in which no one is enslaved by poverty; and to cooperate with other bodies, both inside and outside the Liberal Democrat Party, who share these objectives." Which first: LVT or Money Reform?
Wed Oct The topic for ALTER's Fringe event at this year's Lib Dem Conference, in Liverpool on 18 September, was "Has the Banking Crisis Strengthened the Case for Land Value Taxation?". ALTER committee member Brian Hodgkinson presented the 'for' case; Ben Dyson, from the PositiveMoney campaign (but also a supporter of LVT) agreed - but argued the case for Money Reform to come first.
Newcastle offers to revive Smart Tax research
Tue Oct ALTER's Fringe at the Liberal Democrats' conference in Liverpool last month heard the recently en-nobled former leader of Newcastle City Council announce that his city could be a study area for the Party's policy of Land Value Taxation. Cllr Lord John Shipley, who has served on the Council for 35 years, was speaking a month after resigning as Leader to become a full-time working peer. The Liberal Democrats have run Newcastle since 2004.
