Investing in Institutions
Ryan A. Compton Daniel Giedeman Noel D. Johnson Robust institutional change is difficult to achieve. However, the growth paths of some countries are more likely to be affected by contemporaneous political turmoil than others. This paper supports this claim using data on GDP growth during periods of extreme political turmoil for 69 countries between 1870 and 2000. The authors argue that the robustness of a country’s growth path to political uncertainty depends on the degree to which individuals are invested in its current institutions.

30. Mind And Society By Vilfredo Pareto
First few pages of Pareto s opus magnum on economic theory.
http://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/philosophy/works/it/pareto.htm
Vilfredo Pareto (1916)
Source , publ. Dover, 1935. First dozen pages reproduced here. . Human society is the subject of many researches. Some of them constitute specialised disciplines: law, political economy, political history, the history of religions, and the like. Others have not yet been distinguished by special names. To the synthesis of them all, which aims at studying human society in general, we may give the name of sociology. . That definition is very inadequate. It may perhaps be improved upon - but not much; for, after all, of none of the sciences, not even of the several mathematical sciences, have we strict definitions. Nor can we have. Only for purposes of convenience do we divide the subject-matter of our knowledge into various parts, and such divisions are artificial and change in course of time. Who can mark the boundaries between chemistry and physics, or between physics and mechanics? And what are we to do with thermodynamics? If we locate that science in physics, it will fit not badly there; if we put it with mechanics, it will not seem out of place; if we prefer to make a separate science of it, no one surely can find fault with us. Instead of wasting time trying to discover the best classification for it, it will be the wiser part to examine the facts with which it deals. Let us put names aside and consider things. In the same way, we have something better to do than to waste our time deciding whether sociology is or is not an independent science - whether it is anything but the "philosophy of history" under a different name; or to debate at any great length the methods to be followed in the study of sociology. Let us keep to our quest for the relationships between social facts, and people may then give to that inquiry any name they please. And let knowledge of such relationships be obtained by any method that will serve. We are interested in the end, and much less or not at all interested in the means by which we attain it.

33. David Ricardo
About the life and studies of the important figure in the development of economic theory.
http://www.newschool.edu/nssr/het/profiles/ricardo.htm
David Ricardo, 1772-1823
The brilliant British economist David Ricardo was one the most important figures in the development of economic theory. He articulated and rigorously formulated the " Classical" system of political economy. The legacy of Ricardo dominated economic thinking throughout the 19th Century. David Ricardo's family was descended from Iberian Jews who had fled to Holland during a wave of persecutions in the early 18th Century. His father, a stockbroker, emigrated to England shortly before Ricardo's birth in 1772. David Ricardo was his third son (out of seventeen!). At the age of fourteen, after a brief schooling in Holland, Ricardo's father employed him full-time at the London Stock Exchange, where he quickly acquired a knack for the trade. At 21, Ricardo broke with his family and his orthodox Jewish faith when he decided to marry a Quaker. However, with the assistance of acquaintances and on the strength of his already considerable reputation in the City of London, Ricardo managed to set up his own business as a dealer in government securities. He became immensely rich in a very short while. In 1814, at the age of 41, finding himself "sufficiently rich to satisfy all my desires and the reasonable desires of all those about me" (Letter to Mill, 1815), Ricardo retired from city business, bought the estate of Gatcomb Park and set himself up as a country gentleman. Egged on by his good friend James Mill , Ricardo got himself elected into the British parliament in 1819 as an independent representing a borough in Ireland, which he served up to his death in 1823. In parliament, he was primarily interested in the currency and commercial questions of the day, such as the repayment of public debt, capital taxation and the repeal of the Corn Laws. (cf. Thomas

From all these general comments, however, on the achievements and the limitations of the "mathematical" and the "psychological" aspects of all that was "new" in neo-classical as compared with Ricardian-classi-cal economic theory, I turn now, finally, to a different, over-all comparison of the old and new systems of economic "doctrines."

In a sense the "neo-classical" phase of the history or development of economic theory involved not only the beginning of the still continuing, progressive "mathematicization" of much economic theory, but also the beginning of the trend, which I have just been deploring, toward general prevalence of the mistaken view or supposition that all economic theory

Irving Fisher (February 27, 1867 – April 29, 1947) was an American economist , health campaigner, and eugenicist , and one of the earliest American neoclassical economists , though he later rejected the underlying theory of general equilibrium , and his later work on debt deflation is instead considered in the Post-Keynesian school. Although he was perhaps the first celebrity economist, his reputation during his lifetime was irreparably harmed by his sanguine attitude immediately prior to the crash of 1929, and his theory of debt deflation was ignored in favor of the work of John Maynard Keynes His reputation has since recovered in neoclassical economics since his work was popularized in the late 1950s ( Hirshleifer 1958 ), and more widely due to an increased interest in debt deflation in the
