45. Economic Theory [Virtual Economy]
(type=long) Introduction to the economic theory section of the Virtual Economy.

Economic Theory
This room in the Library gives you details about the various different areas of economic theory. As economies have developed over time, so economic theory has developed as well to try to explain changing circumstances. In the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century Classical theory held the balance of power in economic circles, but it began to lose it at the time of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Classical theory had difficulty in explaining why the depression kept getting worse, and an economist called John Maynard Keynes began to develop alternative ideas. This marked the birth of Keynesian economics and most post-war governments managed the economy using Keynesian policies up until the beginning of the 1970s. Then Keynesian theory ran into trouble as unemployment and inflation began to rise together - a phenomenon known as stagflation . At this point another economist stepped in - Milton Friedman . He was known as a Monetarist , and along with a number of other Monetarist economists at Chicago University did a lot of work trying to explain what caused inflation. However, the Conservative government of the 1980s gradually became disillusioned with Monetarism and then returned to a modern variation of classical economic management -

Autobiography
To my relief, I passed the "control", the examination at age eleven to decide who could go on to the high school, the Douglas Ewart. In these days there were prizes every year. With much parental encouragement, I tried to win them, and as far as I remember was rather successful. But I must have had some sense that this drive to win is somewhat ignoble. When a friend beat me in chemistry I recollect being scolded at home for accepting defeat with equanimity. By the age of fourteen I had acquired a strange enthusiasm for mathematics, having managed to acquire a book called Teach Yourself Calculus

Isn't that what theory is supposed to do? I will take you on a journey through contemporary and not so contemporary economics. It'll leave you searching for answers and wondering where your calculator went. That's the whole point of the free market capitalist system - it's never supposed to make any sense unless you are a mathematician. I dedicate this to anyone who ever wanted copies of my notes when they missed lectures. This is what I was really writing. Install this theme Sociobiology: Economics and Consumption tabula rasa sociobiologist As a student of anthropology, I always found the work of Wilson quite disconcerting - I believed that it was suggestive of an ecological determinism that was strongly linked to discriminatory and racist ideals. Many scholars of the social sciences believe that the United States is entering what is termed as a post-ethnic milieu , one in which class holds paramount over ethnic ties.

The University of Warwick General Information

The purpose of the Association for Public Economic Theory, APET, is to foster interaction between applied researchers in public economics and economic theorists. Thus, PET 2000 will have three themes: pure theory, public economic theory, and social and policy issues; submissions under any of these headings are welcome. Under the second and third themes, there will be a special focus on international tax competition under conditions of globalisation. It is anticipated that most participants will be accommodated on campus. We encourage you to submit an abstract as soon as possible so that we can guarantee you your preferred choice of accommodation. The University of Warwick is located near the city of Coventry and the Birmingham International airport. Coventry is about an hour and a half from London (and London-Heathrow) by train. The University is about a £6 cab ride from Coventry and a £20 cab ride from Birmingham airport.

About The Department Economic Theory
Parag Pathak studies the economics of matching in a wide variety of contexts, most notably medical markets and public school choice. Drazen Prelec is actively involved in research and teaching on psychology and economics.
Graduate students who plan to specialize in economic theory, and who expect to write dissertations in this field, select a minimum of two advanced courses on game theory, contract theory, and behavioral economics. Other courses cover a variety of more specialized topics such as auction theory, bargaining theory, decision theory, and dynamic optimization. While not all of these courses are required for students to take general exams in economic theory, most students who study economic theory as a major field enroll in virtually all of the advanced theory courses. The set of faculty members teaching the advanced theory courses varies from year to year, and the content of these courses often varies with changes in instructors.
There is a close connection between some issues in economic theory and the modern applied field of financial economics. Much of the modern theory of asset pricing derives from research in economic theory on choice under uncertainty and the allocation of risk in security markets. A substantial body of current research on corporate financial policy begins with insights from contract theory, and from analysis of how firms and households behave in economic environments characterized by asymmetric information. These close ties between theory and financial economics lead many students who plan to write dissertations in finance to study economic theory as one of their two primary fields of specialization.
