The Fate of Arabia Felix
September 28th, 2006 I was reading something and found out about an interesting and (I think) relatively unknown incident that, had it played out differently, could have significantly altered the course of history. So I decided to write an article about it, and here it is. Incense is a mixture burned in religios rituals. Two most important ingredients are frankincense and myrrh. They are both obtained by collecting the resin which leaks when their respective trees are cut. When burned, these resins produce strong odour. Frankincense tree:
Frankincense resin:
Source areas:
Contemporary Roman historian Strabo in his work Geography gives an account of how Romans decided to conquer Arabia Felix. In 26 BC, on orders from Emperor Augustus, Roman governor of Egypt, Aelius Gallus, took upon organizing a military campaign with the goal of finding the source of incense and subduing it to Roman power. 10 000 soldiers were assembled in Egypt, Romans and Egyptians with 1000 Nabatean auxillaries and 500 Jews. Nabatea was a north Arabian kingdom under Roman influence and Nabateans had agreed to help the Romans. Syllaios, a Nabatean governor, became their guide and thus they began their expedition. Roman expedition:
Roman march back to the sea took only two months, which reinforced their belief that they were purposefully misled by their guide. When they reached the Red Sea, they crossed back to Egypt with the remains of the expeditionary force. Thus ended their ambitious expedition and incense remained in Arab hands. Syllaios, the Nabatean guide, was tried for treason, found guilty and beheaded.

One-dimensional chess — Crooked Timber
November 14th, 2010 jquiggin 3 comments The big issue to be decided by the lame-duck Congress is whether to extend Bush’s tax cuts for the very rich[1]. This is a one-dimensional chess game, with the obvious zero-sum property that if the tax go through, the Republicans win and (at least in standard political terms) the Democrats lose by an equal amount. There seems to be a near-universal consensus that
(i) The game is a forced win for the Dems (pass a bill extending the cuts for everyone but the rich and dare the Repugs to oppose it)
(ii) The Dems opening move will be to resign This analysis certainly gives support to the idea of unobserved dimensions, presumably monetary fn1. The option of not extending them for the well-off, and doing something serious about the deficit without too much impact on demand is way outside the Overton window. via crookedtimber.org Posted via email from Categories: Economics - General Tags:

Login ... John Sides notes, the November mid-term elections barely put a dent in incumbents, who enjoyed an 86% re-election rate. The number of contests with no incumbent running also remained little changed. This basic lack of contestability in the US political system explains a lot about the US. In Australia, we can be thankful for the independence of the Australian Electoral Commission, which routinely unseats incumbents through electoral redistributions and ensures that the political system as a whole remains contestable. Had an Australian political party done to Australia what Congress has done to the US, we can be fairly confident that not only would many of their MPs lose their seats, but the party responsible would probably never govern again. posted on 13 November 2010 by skirchner in Politics

Trackbacks Permalink The big four banks have now set their post-November RBA tightening mortgage interest rates Far from being greedy, the banks are being prudent, while the government tries to induce them into taking on additional risk. Of course, we could always go back to the days of regulated interest rates and non-price credit rationing, when getting money from the bank was a beauty contest that saw housing credit go only to the rich.

Women, Men, Couples: Decision-making under Risk and the Dynamics of Power Balance A substantial body of research investigates how individuals incorporate risk into their decision process. However, in many day-to-day life contexts of couples, such as financial investments, insurance, retirement plans, or residential location, decisions are (or should be) made jointly. Anthony Ziegelmeyer (Max Planck Institute of Economics), André de Palma and Nathalie Picard (University Cergy-Pontoise, Paris) analyzed how decision-making power is allocated between men and women, and identify the link between risky decisions made by couples and risky decisions. Their most important result: Far from being fixed, the balance of power within the household is not static, but changes over time in a dynamic process.
Couples were presented with tasks involving binary choices between a lottery and a sure payoff. In the first part of the experiment spouses were separated and chose independently. In the second part of the experiment male spouses rejoined their partner and they made joint decisions. The researchers estimated both the spouses and the couples' degrees of risk aversion and they assessed how the risk preferences of the two spouses aggregate when they make risky decisions. In most couples, the man was initially more successful than the woman in influencing couple choices but the woman progressively gained power over the course of decision-making.
