Consumption or Wealth?
The theory that human labor is the source of wealth has led us to believe that more people can always make more wealth, as if resources are unimportant. That was true when human labor was the weakest link in the chain of production before machines multiplied our labor power.
After the industrial revolution, the old value of frugality still limited consumption to what was really necessary. With that low level of consumption the automation of production created unemployment. We chose to cure that unemployment by replacing grandpa's frugality They feared that the frugal habits maintained by most American families would be difficult to break. Perhaps even more threatening was the fact that the industrial capacity for turning out goods seemed to be increasing at a pace greater than people's sense that they needed them. with consumer waste. Full employment requires that we consume all that full employment can produce, even if that's more than we want or need.
The consumer economy A "consumer economy" must avoid satisfing demand, because if people already had what they want they wouldn't keep consuming enough to provide full employment. Conservation has no place in a consumer economy. is benefited by unrepairable goods, planned obsolescence, throw-away living, and war. It seeks increased consumption to make jobs, but an efficient system cannot develop so long as we make growing consumption our goal.
