Home Research Commentary C.V. Teaching My main interest these days is connecting the economics of the family with evolutionary and reproductive biology, replacing the generic "parent-child" or "person 1/person 2" family members with their real world counterparts: mothers, fathers, sons and daughters (and maternal grandmothers, and paternal uncles, etc.). I also have a longstanding interest in the motivation for private intergenerational transfers. I created this website to make it easier for people to locate and access my work. If there is something of mine that you are looking for but can't find here please email me at donald.cox@bc.edu

Objective function
I am an economist, currently at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy . My research aims at constructing models of the interplay between institutions and the behavior of agents with a focus on economic outcomes. These models should have a direct statistical/econometric counterpart to allow for empirical validation. The statistical analysis of the data should be complemented with the relevant qualitative knowledge about institutions and agents' behavior. Finally, my research should have practical implications for policy making.
Current position
  • Assistant professor in economics, University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy
  • News
    • My paper "Job Security Legislation and Job Duration: Evidence from the U.K." [pdf] has just been published in the Journal of Labor Economics July 2009 issue. I want to thank the editor and referees for their help in improving and streamlining the paper.
    Current research projects
    • I am currently working on the impact of labor market shocks such as job loss on the probability of divorce, and how this impact varies with the duration of the relationship. I.e. are couples who are together for longer more likely to stay together when one of the partners loses their job? I am working on several early stage projects investigating the impact of labor market institutions in developing countries.

    Research interests
An enduring interest of Albert (Bert) Steenge concerns the way economies find answers to ever-changing internal and external conditions. A considerable part of his work focuses on the ‘middle range', i.e. the ‘meso-level' of inter-industry and inter-sectoral relations, with extensions into micro-foundations and macro-economics. Input-Output analysis and inter-industry economics, with their variants and extensions, provide main sources of methodological inspiration.
Some of the issues Albert Steenge is currently working on:
    • Dynamic modeling and scenarios History of multi-sector analysis Catastrophe input-output theory
