Ecuador South America
CULTURE Amazonian frontier towns, Pacific coast fishing villages, rambling old haciendas, packed markets, and colonial cities provide the stage on which Ecuador's cultures intermingle; each striving to maintain its own identity and history while also charting a meaningful path into the future. Even outside these cultural crossroads, in a day, because of Ecuador's compactness, one can experience any number of Ecuador's distinct cultures. Eleven different peoples make up Ecuador's Indigenous population. By far the largest of these is the Andean Quichua, who number more than 2 million. In addition to the Quichua, the Otavalenos, Salasacas, and Saraguros - all modern-day couriers of the ancient tongue of the Incas - reside in the Ecuadorian Andes. The Amazon basin is equally as rich in indigenous culture as the highlands. Despite increasing pressures from the industrialized world, shamanistic traditions still thrive within the rainforest worlds of the Huaorani, Zaparo, Cofan, lowland Quichua, Siona, Secoya, Shuar, and Achuar. Modernization has not robbed Ecuador's cities and towns of their distinct local flavors largely because it is people not just historic sites that give these places their character. Otavalo, long famous for its warm, enterprising indigenous people, continues its friendly tradition in the twenty-first century. Banos, with its hot springs and agreeable climate, welcomes visitors day in and day out with unwavering smiles. And Quito, the country's political center, has developed into a cosmopolitan city while maintaining its small town candor and geniality.

How many can you think of? Painting, music, and writing are all forms of art. Think about how many different art forms you run into every day. From the actors on your favorite television show to your favorite bands and musicians, art is all around you. Now imagine if there were no artists. No television to watch, no books or magazines to read and no music. What would your day be like? Would you like life without artists? Many artists of all kinds go to school to learn art. Actors go to acting schools and many musicians go to special music schools. Some artists learn how to make artwork for advertisements; others go to school to learn fine art. It's easy to think of fine art as art forms you'd find in a museum, things like painting, drawing, and sculpture. Many years ago, there was a world famous art school in Ecuador. This school was in Ecuador's capital city of Quito. Of course, it was named the Quito School of Art.

Students explore Ecuador's current realities and conditions, which are being shaped by its politics, history, intercultural and interethnic relations, identity issues, and the new political and socioeconomic challenges implicit in the implementation of its innovative and highly inclusive new constitution. Ecuador is currently in the process of significant political and economic transition: students witness the ways in which the increased participation of indigenous organizations and other formerly excluded minorities is paving the way toward a more inclusive and representative democracy.

    • In Ecuador people can greet you with their smile or just by saying "hi" in spanish. Some ecuadorian can greet you by saying hi but not in spanish but in Quechua, their native language. Some Andean people who live in the mountain regions still speak the Quechua language. Through out history, women were the ones who had to stay at home while their husbands went to work. Women had to stay at home to do the chores and take care of the children and serve their husbands. Today, that has changed in Ecuador. In Ecuador it is reversed. The woman now go to work and most men stay at home to take care of their children. Ecuadorians know were the people come from because of the way they are dressed. Many ecuadorians dress differently according to the place or region they live. Some festivals or holidays are celebrated differently in Ecuador. During the Christmas time in Ecuador the Novenas or house tours begin the holiday season and it starts nine days before Christmas. Ecuadorians visit different homes looking at the nativity scenes and decorations. Children at this time place their list of presents into an old shoe waiting for Papa Noel (Santa Claus) to come and visit. Everyone get together with their family to celebrate Christmas. A special cookie is made and is eaten as a specil treat.

The Cuddly Cuy Serves Ecuador Culture in Many Ways
In South America the guinea pig is called a cuy. Cuyes are revered in Ecuador culture and are utilized in several ways, primarily as a food source. Cuyes are also used in spiritual practices and healing ceremonies, which are performed on the patient by a healer or shaman, also known as a yachak. The healing ceremony generally starts with a smudging, which is a cleansing of the patient's aura or energy field with herbs such as sage or sweetgrass. Sometime a container of water is set nearby to absorb any negative energy. The shaman will then take a cuy and holding it tight, pass it rapidly over the torso, head, legs and arms of the patient. An egg may be used instead of a cuy and is rolled all over the patient's body. Both the cuy and the egg absorb negative energies. Should you decide to participate in this kind of cleansing ritual, don't be too surprised or upset if the shaman thrashes you with the body or tail of the cuy or with a bundle of herbs or plants. This is not meant to be abusive to either you or the animal, but is considered an excellent means to remove any unhealthy or toxic energies that have collected and to balance the aura. The shaman may also blow cigarette smoke around the patient and spray a fine mist into the patient's face after taking a swig of liquor mixed with water from a bottle. The animal at some point dies (or, some suspect, is asphyxiated by the shaman). The healer then cuts the animal open or breaks the egg and reads the insides to diagnose disease, ailments or problems the patient may be experiencing. Then the appropriate remedy is prescribed.
