Green Bay's Eisenhower Elementary Principal Claudia Orr receives $25,000 Milken Educator Award
State Superintendent Tony Evers made a visit to Eisenhower Elementary School, not just to praise the school's improvements in academic achievement, but to recognize Claudia Orr, the school's principal as the Wisconsin recipient of a 2010 Milken Educator Award. The $25,000 cash award is one of 55 given by the Milken Family Foundation nationwide this year. Celebrate American Education Week November 14-20, 2010 State Superintendent's Proclamation "Claudia's success at turning around Eisenhower Elementary School comes from her ability to connect with her staff, parents, and the community," Evers said. "She is truly among the top education leaders in our state and nation and worthy of the Milken National Educator award." A former bilingual elementary teacher in urban schools, Orr is in her fourth year as principal at Eisenhower Elementary in Green Bay. To strengthen student literacy, Orr joined her staff in attending a reading conference. The comprehensive literacy program they implemented resulted in a 30 percent increase in reading scores in just one year. As a native Spanish speaker, Orr has reached out to families that had previously distanced themselves from the school because of language barriers, encouraging them to be partners in their children's education. Orr is recognized for her "no excuses" leadership that sets high expectations for her teachers, students, and families.

Message from Superintendent Paul G. Pastorek
It starts with a simple belief ... all children can learn.
I am honored to serve as Louisiana’s State Superintendent. As I tend to the complex issues related to public education, I am guided by one key focus the 650,000 children enrolled in our public schools and our responsibility to provide them with an educational experience that allows them to thrive throughout their lives. For decades, like many other states, Louisiana has repeatedly applied failing solutions to improve the ability of public schools to adequately educate our young people, and that impasse still impedes our current effort. However, over the last decade, our state has made great strides in efforts to improve the academic success of students and to eliminate the achievement gap between races and socioeconomic classes. But the potential is even greater, and if we approach our challenges together with urgency, energy, determination and knowledge; I am certain we can transform education, our communities, our state and our children’s future. As we push forward, we are fortunate to have the support of more than 100,000 district and school employees and 600 plus Department employees who contribute daily to the education of our children. I am humbled, inspired and extremely grateful to each of them, as well as the thousands of volunteers, community leaders and government officials who are inspiring greatness in our children through their advocacy and outreach. There is no limit to what we can achieve – even in times of adversity and controversy except for what we are unwilling to imagine, believe in or commit ourselves to. In the case of education, I am convinced the great people of Louisiana are committed wholeheartedly and will work tirelessly to cultivate the ideas, intelligence, dreams and promise of our children.

Creating a Smart Arkansas is what the Arkansas Department of Education is all about. How do we do this? By supporting students, teachers and school administrators through top-notch curriculum development and ongoing, research-based learning opportunities for educators, the state has already witnessed unprecedented gains in educational attainment of students. Proof:
    • In 2010, scores on both the Arkansas Augmented Benchmark exams and Stanford Achievement Test again improved, with more than 60 percent of Arkansas's public school students at all grade levels scoring at grade level or higher on the benchmark exams. At some grades, more than 80 percent are scoring at grade level or higher. The achievement gap between majority and minority students narrowed for the fourth year in a row on the 2010 Arkansas Augmented Benchmark Exams.
