How Students Learn
( A very quick overview)
The environment we create, the assignments we give, and the choices students make, in large part, determine their future. Well-established models of knowledge acquisition outline what we know as declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and self-knowledge. Declarative knowledge can be characterized as factual information than can be elaborated through written or oral communication. Within this category, declarative knowledge can also be formed through structural transformation or mental operations. Much of the Content of our courses would be considered declarative knowledge. Procedural knowledge makes up the skills and processes the student acquires through instruction and experience.
An underlying component of all teaching strategies is student and teacher motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic. The most obvious extrinsic motivators are grades, whereas the most common intrinsic motivators include the satisfaction of gaining new knowledge. The thoughtful and creative instructor considers new ways of motivating students. This could mean, pointing out the importance of the information and creating a learning environment where student discovery is actually motivating in itself. In any case, motivation for learning is the responsibility of both the instructor and the student. Instructors who talk with their students about self-monitoring and learning strategies are motivating them to take responsibility for their own learning.

THE PRINCIPLE OF CONNECTEDNESS: Learning is fundamentally about making and maintaining connections: biologically through neural networks; mentally among concepts, ideas and meanings; and experientially
through interaction between the mind and the environment, self and other, generality and context, deliberation and action. THE PRINCIPLE OF A COMPELLING SITUATION: Learning is enhanced by taking place in the context of a compelling situation that balances challenge and opportunity, stimulating and utilizing the brain's ability to
conceptualize quickly and its capacity and need for contemplation and reflection upon experiences. THE PRINCIPLE OF AN ACTIVE SEARCH FOR MEANING: Learning is an active search for meaning by the learner constructing knowledge rather than passively receiving it, shaping as well as being shaped by
experiences. THE PRINCIPLE OF DEVELOPMENT AND HOLISM: Learning is developmental, a cumulative process involving the whole person, relating past and present, integrating the new with the old, starting from but
transcending personal concerns and interests.

Christian A. Johnson Institute for Effective Teaching The "Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education," originally published in the AAHE Bulletin (Chickering & Gamson, 1987), are a popular framework for evaluating teaching in traditional, face-to-face courses. The principles are based on 50 years of higher education research (Chickering & Reisser 1993). A faculty inventory (Johnson Foundation, "Faculty," 1989) and an institutional inventory (Johnson Foundation, "Institutional," 1989) based on these principles have helped faculty members and higher-education institutions examine and improve their teaching practices.

Principle 1: Good Practice Encourages Student-Faculty Contact
Principle 2: Good Practice Encourages Cooperation Among Students
Principle 3: Good Practice Encourages Active Learning
Principle 4: Good Practice Gives Prompt Feedback
Principle 5: Good Practice Emphasizes Time on Task
Principle 6: Good Practice Communicates High Expectations
Principle 7: Good Practice Respects Diverse Talents and Ways of
Learning

    About TE!
Teach Effectively is a source for current news and opinion about effective teaching. Teach Effectively emphasizes evidence-based instruction and educational practice. Although the majority of the content on Teach Effectively focuses on instruction for students in special education (especially those with Learning Disabilities or Emotional and Behavioral Disorders), the entries also address other disabilities (e.g., autism, ADHD) and are applicable to students at risk for school problems. The principal contributor to Teach Effectively is John Wills Lloyd , but TE has also featured posts by Margaret P. Weiss and James M. Kauffman.
TE , which began publishing in January of 2005, can make no great claims to influence. However, it has gotten a good review or two, does receive about 100 visits a day, and has sometimes even been picked up by other (probably far more influential) sources. It has been included in some lists of Web resources, including these:
