Breaking news:
The Top Ten electric vehicles you can buy right now (for the most part)
by Sebastian Blanco RSS feed on Feb 7th 2007 at 1:24PM
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/environment/The_Top_Ten_electric_vehicles_you_can_buy_right_now_for_the_most_part'; I think all the news of the Tesla Roadster and the Chevy Volt that came out since last summer has reminded a lot of people that there are some serious contenders to the gasoline engine. The electric vehicle (EV) community certainly thinks 2006 was a good year for EVs. In fact, the past has seen some truly cool EVs, and the list of retired EVs is long and, for some, emotional: the EV1, the Ranger EV, the RAV4 EV and so on. But there should be no time for mourning and instead a look toward the future. Actually, we don't even need to guess what great EVs are coming down the pipe, there are already some wicked cool EVs available today. If you're ready to get off the gas in 2007, consider one of these, the Top Ten Electric Cars of 2007 (Aside from the Roadster, which certainly deserves the Number 1 spot, the list is in no real order).

      Copper Applications in Electrical
February 1998 By Robert Weed Impact of Electric Vehicles on Copper Electric Vehicles and the Environment Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Are Electric Vehicles Really Clean? ... Additional Web Sites Electric and hybrid electric vehicles have reached a new level of development with introductions by Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda and Toyota. Although a large market has not yet appeared, these manufacturers have invested significant effort and capital in development and testing and it appears EVs and hybrid EVs will be coming onto the market in significant numbers. Because an electric motor is used as the primary propulsion source, these vehicles will have a much higher copper content than a conventional vehicle which currently averages about 55 pounds of copper and copper alloys.
Impact of Electric Vehicles on Copper
EVs have undergone a tremendous change since the first efforts of the Copper Development Association. In the early seventies Don Miner, in the Detroit CDA office, assisted with the manufacture and installation of a custom built electric van for the city of Birmingham, MI. Components for EVs are now mass produced by major manufacturers intent on gaining market share in this dynamic industry. At this time an EV will use, on average, as much copper as a similar vehicle with an internal combustion engine. Most of the copper used for non-electrical functions is eliminated, such as thermal components and alloys in cast aluminum. However, the motor and increased electrical functions more than double the amount of copper used for wiring and connectors. Most EVs are using 250 - 350 volts in their power source, which means all connectors and wiring attached to the batteries, inverters and power controllers must be increased in size to handle the higher voltages and currents.

    Car Invention Trivia
Between 1832 and 1839 (the exact year is uncertain), Robert Anderson of Scotland invented the first crude electric carriage. A small-scale electric car was designed by Professor Stratingh of Groningen, Holland, and built by his assistant Christopher Becker in 1835. P ractical and more successful electric road vehicles were invented by both American Thomas Davenport and Scotsmen Robert Davidson around 1842. Both inventors were the first to use non-rechargeable electric cells. Frenchmen Gaston Plante invented a better storage battery in 1865 and his fellow countrymen Camille Faure improved the storage battery in 1881. This improved-capacity storage battery paved the way for electric vehicles to flourish. zSB(3,3)

    Summary
Our use of the term, Electric Vehicles (EVs) describes hybrid vehicles (such as the Toyota Prius), all-electric or plug-in vehicles (such as the Tesla Roadster). The evolution of the EV is a promising automotive solution that in addition to reducing air pollution, maintenance costs and a dependence on foreign oil, also reduces noise emissions. Millions of people live near busy roadways, thoroughfares, intersections and parking lots with vehicle noise at all hours of the day and night. Because electric motors produce less sound than Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) requiring a tail pipe muffler to mitigate noise emissions, EVs make urban life more livable for affected residents. Consumers are attracted to EVs because they are quieter vehicles. « Top of Page
    Legal Considerations
The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), an advocacy organization for its sight-impaired members is lobbying the government to mandate artificial vehicle sound on EVs. They are also collaborating with automakers to voluntarily introduce artificial vehicle sound. They claim that EVs pose a safety risk for sight-impaired pedestrians who rely on hearing an approaching vehicle to judge its speed and proximity while navigating intersection crosswalks and other traffic situations. When the NFB first announced that EVs presented a danger, the media attention was considerable, with coverage in newspapers, television news, automotive blogs and even making the rounds of late-night comedy monologues. However, few questions were raised on the issue on the impact of increased noise pollution on society.
