This short guide will provide you some basic information and what you can expect from this field. Education: Most electrical engineer will have ended up with a Bachelor of Engineering or something very similar. Almost all universities and colleges offer this degree plan which will give the recipient a wide range of interlinking knowledge in the fields of electricity, Mathematics, computer science and physics. After you have completed your 4-year degree, you can opt to go on to a Masters in Electrical Engineering or even a PHD. Currently, there is over 300,000 people in the United States working as electrical engineers. Work Environment: As an electrical engineer, your work place environment will be based on what area you specialize in. The main fields are telecommunications, Power, Control, Electronics, Microelectronics, Computers, Signal Processing and Instrumentation. Even though these are all specific disciplines, they are closely related enough in which you can jump fields in your career. You can also take your degree and experience global which means that you can find employment in any country, especially if you hold an American Degree. Most engineers will work in small teams or sometimes on their own. You can expect to have a fair amount of freedom in this career.

Phone: 216.687.5407
Fax: 216.687.5405 I spent 14 years in industry before coming to Cleveland State University in 1999. I received a PhD from Syracuse University, an MS from the University of Washington, and a BS from Arizona State University (all in Electrical Engineering). My work experience includes engineering contributions to the aerospace, automotive, agricultural, biomedical, process control, and software industries. I have lived in Seattle, Syracuse, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Akron. My research interests include control theory, signal processing, and computer intelligence. For more detailed information, see my curriculum vita and publications pages.
  • Book: Optimal State Estimation: Kalman, H-infinity, and Nonlinear Approaches . I took everything I learned in the past 20 years about state estimation and wrote it in this book. I like step-by-step explanations, so that is how I wrote the book. I tried to make it clear, but also included recent research results, so it has a nice balance of established technology and cutting-edge research. It includes 89 worked examples, 176 written exercises, and 52 computer exercises. A solutions manual is available to course instructors from the publisher. Matlab code for the 32 computer examples can be downloaded from the book web site . The book is documented with 381 references, ranging from historical references from the 1920s, to papers published in 2006.

Zhichun Zhu, ECE assistant professor, has been awarded a five-year, $400,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award to investigate the architecture for building this next generation of computers. Sudip K. Mazumder, ECE associate professor, has received his 4th patent; Fuel-cell based power generating system having power conditioning apparatus. Distributed power-conditioning and control approaches that eliminate the need for separate power stages for fuel-cell and battery/energy-buffer units, thereby increasing power density and reducing cost, and ensures sustained and high energy-conversion efficiency by dynamic power management and maximum power-point tracking.
