A cornerstone in the natural sciences and a foundation for research and development in the high-tech sector, Physics is an exciting and rewarding field of study. It explores many of the deeper mysteries of the universe and can lead to a wide range of intriguing career and employment opportunities. Within the Physics Department at UPEI, we provide excellent undergraduate programs to our students, including BSc Honours, Major, and Minor degrees. In addition, our thriving Co-operative Education program provides valuable work experience for students in an array of private- and public-sector settings across Canada and abroad, including the National Research Council Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Victoria, BC, Fiber Connections in Summerside, PEI, and The Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, NS. Our students benefit from small class sizes, dedicated faculty, and a very active and friendly Physics Student Society, as well as opportunities to participate in exciting research projects in experimental and theoretical physics.

ELECTRICITY Although electricity contains many parallels with motion, it involves a fundamentally different force. Electricity is the study of the motion and effect of charges just as mechanics is the study of the motion and effect of masses. The subject of electricity was placed on a firm quantitative basis by the Scottish mathematician and physicist, James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), whose four equations encompass all electromagnetic phenomena. When Einstein, a generation later, upset almost all of "classical physics," Maxwell's equations survived untouched. Electrical demonstrations, especially those involving very high voltages, constitute some of the most spectacular in the whole of physics.
Electrical Safety Considerations
Pulsed currents such as one might encounter with the discharge of a Van de Graaff generator or other charged capacitance present special considerations. One can endure currents that would otherwise be lethal if the duration is short enough. For pulses of less than a few seconds duration, the relevant quantity is the square of the current integrated over the time of the pulse. Values of I t greater than about 0.01 A

ELECTRICITY
When you have finished this page, try the Electricity Quiz. Electricity is a type of activity arising from the existence of charge. The basic unit of charge is that on the proton or electron. The protons charge is called positive while the electron's is negative. A particle of matter usually has a charge. The charge is positive or negative. Two particles with the same charges, both positive or both negative, repel or drive away each other, while two particles with unlike charges are attracted. The negatively charged electrons in an atom are kept near the nucleus because of their attraction for the positively charged protons in the nucleus. Materials differ in their ability to allow electricity to flow through them.
  • Conductors allow electricity to flow through them easily. Copper wire is a good example and makes up our housing and appliance wiring. Insulators are materials that don't allow electricity to pass through them easily. Materials such as rubber are good insulators and are used around appliance and house wires to keep the electricity from creating a short circuit. Semiconductors: conduct electricity under some conditions.

Electricity
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Lightning is the most visible way we see electricity in nature Electricity is a type of energy found in nature. We see it in nature when we see a lightning flash or when we stroke an animal and feel sparks. Scientists have also found we can make electricity if we pass a magnet close to a metal wire or if we put the right chemicals in a jar with two different kinds of metal rod. Scientists have observed that electricity seems to flow like water from one place to another, either as a spark or as a current in a metal. They now know that all matter has electric charge but this is mostly cancelled out by the presence of matter with an opposite charge. We only see an effect when there is too much or too little electric charge in one place so that it is not cancelled out. Since the nineteenth century, electricity has been made into a useful creation that affects every part of our lives. Until then it was just a curiosity or a force of nature seen in a thunderstorm. To be useful electricity has to be made from other sources of energy such as by burning coal or oil or from wind or flowing water in a power station Electricity arrives at our homes through wires from the places where it is made. It is used by
