    ELECTRO CHEMISTRY
For my article, I chose a subject known as Electro Chemistry. My Article is about a CEO of an electric car manufacturer, known as Tesla Sports Cars Inc., wanting to pass his responsibilities to a man whose owned stock in their company before they made it big. The CEO wants to start making these electric cars an everyday car to help bring pollutants down and help make a contribution to the prevention of Global warming.
The car runs by using one large electrochemical battery split into eleven divisions of 621 lithium ion cells, each of which containing its own processor that controls the charge and saves the charge of all the cells. It is a more efficient way of driving because it doesn’t release smog, carbon monoxide, or other gases polluting our atmosphere. The battery also has something called an inverter, which transforms chemical energy into electrical energy.

In the broadest sense, electrochemistry is the study of chemical reactions that produce electrical effects and of the chemical phenomena that are caused by the action of currents or voltages.
    Electric Current
    and Ion Movement
Most inorganic and some organic chemical compounds , when in a molten state or when dissolved in water or other liquids, become ionized; that is, their molecules become dissociated into positive ly and negative ly charged components, which have the property of conducting an electric current . If a pair of electrodes is placed in a solution of an electrolyte , or an ionizable compound, and a source of direct current is connected between them, the positive ions in the solution move toward the negative electrode and the negative ions toward the positive. On reaching the electrodes, the ions may gain or lose electrons and be transformed into neutral atoms or molecules , the nature of the electrode reactions depending on the potential difference, or voltage, applied.

    Electro-chemistry of Stainless Steel
We build small saline filled chambers for biological purposes. It is required to supply a voltage to a stainless steel electrode which is placed in direct contact with the saline. The saline consists of 150 millimoles NaCl and 16 milimoles of Na2HPO4 (Sodium dibasic Phosphate) which acts as a buffer. If a stainless steel electrode and a copper electrode are placed in this solution and a voltage of about 3.5 volts is applied, the cathode (copper) discharges gas, which we assume to be hydrogen. The anode begins to form a light green soluble substance which fits the description of ferrous chloride. However if we instead use 16 millimoles of NaH2PO4 (monobasic)we see a colorless gas (oxygen ?)at the anode and no green substance at all. Can someone help us with the electro-chemistry of this phenomenon ? George C. Malachowski
Cytomation Inc. - Fort Collins, CO, USA. At the anode you are generating Oxygen and Chlorine and Hydrogen at the cathode. The metals in the Stainless Steel are forming Chloride salts. Nickel Chloride, Ferrous Chloride and Chromic Chloride. If the pH is above 8.0, the Nickel will probably precipitate. In time, you may find deposited Iron on the cathode with traces of Chrome. The deposit will be smutty brown with possibly a slight green tint. If you continue electrolysis, the SS will dissolve completely. The Di Sodium Phosphate used alone should be OK. If you require the Sodium Chloride for some reason, I recommend you use either a Platinum metal anode, or a Platinum clad or Platinum plated Titanium material. Carbon can also be used but will eventually fall apart. Iridium Oxide is the best of all but may be cost prohibitive.

June 14, 2010 No Comment Electro-Chemistry The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of chemical energy to electrical energy or electrical energy to chemical energy is called electro-chemistry. Conductors Those substances through which electric current can pass are called conductors. For example all metals are conductors. Non-Conductors Those substances through which electric current cannot pass are called non-conductors. For example plastic, wood are non-conductors. Electrolysis The process in which electricity passes through the aqueous or infused state of some substance. The substances itself decompose into its component. This process is called electrolysis. Electrolyte The compound in molten state or in aqueous solution through which electricity can pass are called electrolyte. Non-Electrolyte Those compounds through which electricity cannot pass are called non-electrolyte. Strong Electrolyte The substances which are highly soluble and completely ionized are called strong electrolyte. For example acids, bases and salts are strong electrolytes.
