The International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression is currently in its 11th year. Researchers and musicians from all over the world gather to share their knowledge and late-breaking work on new musical interface design. The conference started out as a workshop at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) in 2001. Since then, international conferences have been held around the world, hosted by groups dedicated to research on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. Proceedings of all NIME conferences to date may be conveniently navigated using the pages at the University of Trier's DBLP resource, or at the ACM Portal . The DBLP and ACM Portal also provide BibTeX entries for the papers, useful when citing work published at NIME. Since its inception, this organization has achieved a strong international reputation as one of the leading centers for innovation in music. CCM maintains a variety of electronic equipment, instruments and studios, provides instruction and technical assistance, and archives audio recordings. These are available for use by qualified graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff. The Center also performs a wide variety of community services in the arts, including public concerts and lecture series, informational and technical assistance, and artist residencies. The Drake Equation was devised by Dr Frank Drake in 1960, in an attempt to estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy that we are likely to come in contact with. The equation should allow scientists to quantify the uncertainty of the factors which determine the number of potential extraterrestrial civilizations. • Thaddeaus Cahill sets up the Telharmonium or Dynamaphone, a 200-ton array of Edison dynamos that produced different pitched hums according to the speed of the dynamos. The electrical output was "broadcast" over telephone lines.
Lee DeForest invents the Triode Vacuum Tube which led to amplification of electrical signals.
Ferruccio Busoni publishes Sketch for a New Aesthetic of Music discussing the use of electrical and other new sound sources in future music. He was to have a profound effect on his pupil, Edgard Varese.
Italian futurists investigate, classify, and produce noise instruments. Most notable was Luigi Russolo.
1920's Varese writes Ionisation and George Antheil writes Ballet Mecanique: Both use percussion and noise instruments and deal with the "liberation of sound" and a new view of "spatial-temporal" relationships.
Electronic instruments invented during this period include the:
    • Theremin (1919-20) Ondes-Martenot (1928) Trautonium (1928) Hammond Organ (1929) based on technical principles of the Telharmonium

She had her roots in both digital and analog synthesis from the beginning. She studied at Stanford with Max Matthews, the father of computer music, and John Chowning, the father of digital frequency modulation. But what most changed her life was meeting one of the earliest designers of analog music instruments, Don Buchla, whose apprentice she became, working on the assembly line at his Oakland shipyard loft. She was to devote the next ten years of her life to exploring the possibilities of this unique instrument, the Buchla, and her mastery of it would launch her career.
