A male elephant in India sniffs a female's urinary-genital area to determine if she's in heat. (Pic: Bets Rasmussen.) Having identified the sex pheromone that turns elephants on, US scientists have now figured out how this works in a study that may improve animal breeding and reveal more about how animals detect odours.
In 1996, Professor Bets Rasmussen at the tracked down the sex pheromone in female elephant urine. It was the first example of a sex arousal pheromone for a animal leading to copulation attempts. In the latest study, Professor Rasmussen and Professor Glenn Prestwich at The University of Utah , have identified the pheromone’s target: an odorant binding protein, and the chemical steps by which the pheromone and odorant binding protein arouse the male and later may cause this state of arousal to subside.
Their research is published in the current issue of Biochemistry
"For elephants we have now discovered the pathway by which the sex attractant gets from the female’s urine to the male’s sensory organ, thereby arousing the male in a highly visible, dramatic fashion," said Dr Prestwich.
Dr Rasmussen’s work showed the male Asian elephant first uses its trunk and regular sense of smell to sniff the urine of female elephants. The male then touches the urine-laden tip of his trunk to the roof of his mouth, transferring a drop to the vomeronasal organ (VNO), a foot-long chemical-sensing organ distinct from the elephant’s regular sense of smell. If the female is in heat and her urine contains the sex attractant pheromone, the male develops a penile erection and tries to mount the female.

"Twice a year, the Bozo, Somono, Marka and Bambara populations of Central West Mali perpetuate a long tradition of sogo (animal) mask dances,
sometimes accompanied by jiri maanin (little wooden people). The purpose of these festivals, called Sogo bo (animal outings) or Tyeko (the thing of men)
or Do bo (the manifestation of the mystery), is to enact original myths, legends, the cosmos and ancestors, as well as all the new things in the world. They
also depict the psychology of the human character. The youth in the villages are responsible for performing the masquerades based on the information
they learn from the elders.
The oldest Sogo bo characters are bush animals and they still enjoy a special place in the theater. During any performance it is not uncommon to see masquerades representing lions, bush buffalos, hippos, crocodiles, elephants, wild cats, antelopes, and powerful bush spirits. In these communities the bush is defined as the domain of men and it is the locus of power. The interpretation of the theater's bush animal characters are informed by beliefs and

A herd of about 10 rampaging wild elephants have destroyed a newly-planted rubber tree plantation and threatened the lives of local people in Central Highland’s Gia Lai Province.
The elephants devastated crops near the forest edge at Chu Se District in Gia Lai Province and Ea Hleo District in Dak Lak Province over the past three days.
“We were on our way from the rubber plantation to the camp when a group of about ten elephants approached,” a worker from Phuc Cuong Company’s rubber forest in Chu Se District said.
“The elephants were very fierce and destroyed all the trees in their way.
We had to run for our lives after one of them saw us and roared,” he said.
Reports said the elephants had also terrorized others who went into the forest.
“This is the first time so many elephants have come out of the forest,” a local from Ia Blu Commune in Chu Se District, Ksor Lam, said.
Local residents said the wild animals might be from the jungle in Ea Hleo District in Dak Lak Province.

NATIONAL PARKS AND GAMES RESERVES. HISTORIC SITES FOREIGN EXCHANGE ... RIFT VALLEY Some people travel to Africa to see wild elephants in their own environment. However, the number of wild elephants has been steadily declining because people kill elephants for their ivory tusks. In addition, people have settled on much of the land where the animals lived, resulting in a loss of habitat for the elephants. Farming and industry threaten the natural resources needed by elephants to survive. In 1979, an estimated 1,300,000 elephants lived in Africa. In the early 1990's, there were only about 600,000. A public awareness campaign was launched in the late 1980's to save the African elephant. People throughout the world were made aware that thousands of elephants were being slaughtered every year to provide ivory jewelry and carvings.
