Jumbo birth control drives bull elephants wild
Johannesburg THE first field trials of an elephant Pill have been suspended. The trials, taking place in South Africa's Kruger National Park, have thrown the normally orderly elephant society there into turmoil. Last October, a team of scientists from the Institute for Zoo Biology and Wildlife Research in Berlin placed slow-release oestrogen implants, modelled on human contraceptives, inside 10 elephant cows resident in the park. Conservationists wanted to test birth control as a possible alternative to its controversial culling programme in the overcrowded park. Until culling was suspended last year, up to 600 elephants were killed annually. But the oestrogen overload made the cows appear to be on heat permanently, which in turn encouraged the constant unwanted attention of elephant bulls.

Not a very good idea, IMHO. Introducing non-native animals into other places can have some really adverse affects... remember the cane toads and gypsy moths? Seriously, if you want lions and elephants, go to africa.
Lord Blackadder Aug 17, 2005, 04:43 PM Bad idea.
It is a very misguided proposal, if well-meaning.
The reason African megafauna are close to extinction are the following:
Africa is the poorest continent on earth, and is pretty unstable politically. The illegal trade in rare animals (either alive or as "products") is very lucrative. Animal protection laws can't be enforced due to weak/corrupt government. In addition, subsistence farming is the norm and is generally done using methods that render the land unusable after a while, causing people to move to other areas. Drought and conflict also cause people to leave otherwise productive land. Animals that have large ranges like elephants and big cats have their territory invaded by squatters/refugees/settlers who kill them as pests and to sell them to dealers in animal products.
Moving the animals themselves ignores the problems in Africa that are causing the animals to be endangered in the first place. Poverty and political instability are the cause. THAT is what needs to be remedied, not putting elephants in Nebraska. Of course it IS easier to do that than feed and clothe millions of people...

The River Mahaweli that changed its course 800 years ago
The historical records narrate that the Somawathiya stupa was built on the eastern bank of the Mahaveli River. But today the stupa is located about 1/2 km from the west bank of the river. Initial confusion was subsequently solved with discovery that the river has changed its course during the last 800 years and in fact the current sandy road leading to the Somawathi was the path of the river some 800 years ago. The change of course River Mahaweli at Somawthiya correlate well with A. Denis N. Fernando's (at BMICH on 18th October 2002) theory in relation to the " Decline of the ancient Hydraulic civilization of Sri Lanka
Sacred right tooth relic of Buddha
Somawathiya was built in 2nd century BC. According to chronicles, Somawathi Chethiya was built by Prince Giri-aba on the request of his wife Princess Somawathi (sister of King Kavanthissa) who lived on a small community called "Somapura" on the banks of Mahaveli River. Upon completion of the Stupa, Sacred right tooth relic of Buddha was gifted to the prince by Buddhist monk Maha Thera Mahinda. The relic was enshrined in relic chamber of the stupa. From then on till 4th century AD, the sacred city was renovated by King Kannitta Tissa, King Kurtakanna Tissa, King Gamini Abhaya and King Amanda Gamini.

It currently occupies forested habitats in hilly or mountainous terrain, up to about 3600 m (11,800'). An adult eats approximately 150 kg (330 lb) per day - mainly grasses but also leaves, twigs and bark. It feeds during the morning, evening and night and rests during the middle of the day, requiring shade during the hot season to keep from overheating. Elephants cannot go for long without water (they require 70-90 liters (19-24 gal) of fluid/day) and sometimes must travel long distances each day between their water supplies and feeding areas.
One calf is born every 3-4 years after a pregnancy lasting about 22 months. Although mature male elephants may live alone, females live in family groups consisting of mothers, daughters and sisters, together with immature males. Wild elephants can live to be sixty years old.
The Asian elephant once ranged from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in ancient Mesopotamia in the west, east through Asia south of the Himalaya to Indochina and the Malay Peninsula, including

Wild Elephants
Which only goes to show that we are the lucky ones, we could well be the last generation to be able to actually see Elephants in the wild. Of course their lives are well recorded and Natural History Documentaries featuring the wonderful African Elephant are plentiful... ... it's not quite like the real thing though is it? To see a herd of Elephants, close by, while standing in the hot African sun is an unforgettable experience. Speaking of which, due to the heat from that African sun, Wild Elephants need to drink around 50 gallons - 190 litres - of water a day. Which is why if you hang out at enough watering holes - the elephant kind, not the human sundowner kind - then you are sure to see elephants. Home In the News Game Results Team China ... Roundup: African powers reach quarterfinals in Olympic men's soccer, hosts out Beijing: Light rain/Cloudy 29-22°C languages English Chinese Japanese French Spanish Russian Arabic English Sports Soccer Group A Roundup: Argentina storm in Elephants' wild waltz 09:03, August 14, 2008 The Argentina storm is certainly the most impressive thing of Group A at the Beijing Olympic men's soccer tournament, but that is far from the whole story, as the small Elephants' wild waltz caught the eyes of the fans tightly.
Defending champions Argentina cruised ruthlessly and artistically through the group stage with three straight wins over Cote d'Ivoire, Australia and Serbia. The Albiceleste is undoubted the dominating force in this group. Star players Lionel Messi, Juan Riquelme, Javier Mascherano and Fernando Gago forged a glistening midfield and functioned well with frontman Ezquiel Lavezzi and Sergio Aguero.
However, the Argentines were tested greatly in their first two outings with two sharply contrasting styles. Cote d'Ivoire had a brave and attacking 90 minutes with the reigning champions, spoiling their short passing play with well-read interceptions and strong individual ability.
The Ivorians always rounded the Argentine defenders single- handedly. Chelsea's Salomon Kalou, captain Gervinho and other players troubled the Argentines from time to time.

WILD HUMANS
I cannot express my joy when this book arrived. The Orphans have been close to my heart for years. I have looked forward to visiting them myself, but getting to Kenya in this economy is not happening. WILD ORPHANS is a close (and distant) second. I will get there someday, and now I know that it could not be any more beautiful in person.
Fantastic
The photography is amazing and that alone is worth getting this book. However the stories behind each picture and story of each member of the Orphan 8 are extremely touching, and provide a wonderful insight between humans and elephants. It will leave you in awe of the difference the wonderful people at the David Sheldrick Wild life Trust make in this endeavor to help save the African Elephant.

Captivating Photographic Essay of Orphaned African Elephants Photographer Gerry Ellis spent 2 years with the orphaned elephants of the David Sheldrick Wild Orphans " is fantastic photojournalism and more personal work than I have seen from Ellis before. Ellis' love for this project shows. Admirers of elephants and those concerned with their fate -or that of African wildlife in general- won't want to miss "Wild Orphans".
