Why Use An Email Service Provider?
Writing by Justin Lavino on Friday, August 22, 2008 Comments Off
Email Service Providers work hard to get email delivered. There is more to it than just software and flashy GUI’s to make users happy. Servers must be maintained, software must be kept up to date, and reputations must be earned. The real trick is maintaining a healthy IP reputation. This is by far the most significant reason to use an ESP. ESP’s maintain white lists with major ISP’s like Comcast, Verizon, Yahoo, AOL, etc. Companies like yahoo and hotmail all filter based on the IP range’s reputation and the content in the email. Here’s my visualization of how it works: Two body guards are standing in front of the CEO’s office. You watch as several employees approach, and are turned away. You approach, and with a simple wave of your ID badge, you are through. This is just like yahoo or hotmail monitoring your IP range. A good IP reputation makes entry easy. Next, you have to get past the CEO’s executive assistant. At this point, you put on a good show for the executive assistant, show her some fancy brochures and she lets you in. This is usually where content filtering comes into play, so you still have to word your mail correctly or you’ll be sent to SPAM folders.

These free services give you a free email address with either a POP3 mailbox access, IMAP access, web email access, or email aliases that will forward or redirect email sent to that address to another. They may be used by people who are looking for an email address that is independent of their ISP, and thus hopefully more permanent that that given by the ISP. Note that many of the free services block email messages from many sources including legitimate sources like Yahoo! Groups and other email newsletter sources that you may have subscribed to (ie, you deliberately elected to receive those newsletters) with no facility for you to override this. Since so many free providers do this, I no longer bother to mention this for each of the individual free email service entries listed below. If you need more facilities for your email (eg spam protection, virus protection, more space to store your email, etc), you might want to consider using a commercial service like

Premium join:2003-05-26 USA/MidWest kudos:1 Reviews: Comcast Email providers? There is a lot of information provided for email client software, but very little that I can see related to a paid email providers. Are there a few actual email paid provider services out there that work? I use one, mail.com. But I'm getting really tired of not receiving emails for 24 hours, for a paid client that's not acceptable and I have tried to work with them, their web email is instant, but that's not what I want; I want outlook to work in the same manner. I want to see some alternative paid email clients, that can utilize outlook, 2007. List them up folks. I know I'm not around much lately, have a lot going on and TIA's have become the norm for me. Guess I have reached my threshold. If I did miss a FAQ, please point me, or if you have the time or inclination, please list providers; those with long standing accounts, will obviously hold some interest. Please, please don't bother offering the millipedes of free providers. I'm only interested in paid providers.

Premium Email Providers and What They Offer
You've heard of some of the top Internet provider companies such as AOL and Road Runner. When you have an account with an Internet service provider, you also get an email account. The email lets you keep up to a certain amount of space for your email to reside. One of the very largest of the premium email providers is AOL with unlimited storage, virus and spam protection as well as spell checking. A major shortcoming of the application-based email providers though, is that a user had to be at their originating computer in order to check their emails. Enter webmail, where a user can access their email inbox from any computer in the world that has access to the Internet. The first ISP-free premium email service was launched in 1996, and known at HoTMail. Still called Hotmail, it is owned by Windows and one of the most popular and premium email providers out there. Along to follow were others, include Gmail. The downside here is that a user who wants to go back and view an email must be connected to the Internet, whereas with application-based email, old messages are accessible. Regardless of their benefits and shortcomings, here is a short run-down of the premium email providers: Hotmail Previously called MSN Hotmail, and now known as Windows Live Hotmail was launched in 1996, and was one of the first web-based email services. It was sold to Microsoft in 1997 for about $400 million. Users get 5 GB of storage, which unfolds as needed. Highly popular, this premium email provider has an estimated 270 million users in 36 languages all over the world.
