What is NETT? Return to Top What is Emphysema? Emphysema is a chronic lung condition that is a major cause of death and disability in the United States. Two million Americans are affected, largely those who are over age 50. With emphysema, breathing becomes difficult as the fine architecture of the lung is destroyed, leading to large holes in the lung, obstruction of the airways, trapping of air, and difficulty exchanging oxygen because of reduced elasticity of the lungs. In the United States, cigarette smoking is by far the most important risk factor for emphysema. Emphysema costs more than $2.5 billion in annual health care expenses and causes or contributes to 100,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. Current medical treatments include smoking cessation for those who still smoke, exercise rehabilitation, oxygen therapy for those with low blood oxygen levels, supportive and preventive measures such as flu shots, pneumonia vaccine, medications such as bronchodilators to help open airways, prompt treatment of respiratory infections, and lung transplantation.

In people with emphysema, the tissues necessary to support the physical shape and function of the lungs are destroyed. It is included in a group of diseases called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD (pulmonary refers to the lungs). Emphysema is called an obstructive lung disease because the destruction of lung tissue around smaller sacs, called alveoli , makes these air sacs unable to hold their functional shape upon exhalation . It is often caused by smoking The term means swelling and comes from the Greek emhysan meaning inflate , itself composed of en meaning in and physa meaning breath, blast

    What is Emphysema?
Emphysema is a severe lung disease in which the tiny air sacs ( alveoli ) in the lungs become damaged. Normal, healthy lungs look like upside down branches of a tree with many thousands of these tiny air sacs at the ends of those branches. Lungs with emphysema have fewer, larger sacs.
    What Causes Emphysema?
While environmental pollution can cause emphysema, cigarette smoking is by far the most common cause. The chemicals in cigarette smoke are thought to damage the delicate walls of the alveoli, ultimately breaking them down, leaving larger sacs that are less efficient at processing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide that allows us to breathe properly. These larger sacs are also weaker in structure than many smaller ones and will collapse and trap air, making it much more difficult for the lungs to properly inflate and deflate. The result is breathlessness.

Emphysema is a serious lung condition that affects the small air sacs in the lungs (alveoli). This gradual damage to the lungs makes it very hard for you to breath. Emphysema is a common condition in smokers and cannot be cured.
What causes emphysema and who can get it?
Emphysema usually affects older people. It is caused by damage to your lungs over a long period of time, such as from a lifetime of smoking. Smoking is the main cause of emphysema in the UK. Working in industries, such as mining, where you inhale a lot of smoke or dust can also increase your risk of getting emphysema. Very rarely emphysema is a genetic condition caused by a lack of protein. It is quite common for someone with emphysema to suffer from chronic bronchitis This combination is called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and is a common cause of death in heavy smokers.

This is not a site for medical advice, when you need information on a medical condition, consult a professional instead. EMPHYSEMA (Gr. to inflate) is a word vaguely meaning the abnormal presence of air in certain parts of the body. At the present day, however, there are two conditions to which it refers, "pulmonary emphysema" (and the word pulmonary is often omitted) and "surgical emphysema." Of pulmonary emphysema there are two forms, true vesicular and interstitial (or interlobular). Vesicular emphysema signifies that there is an enlargement of air-vesicles, resulting either from their excessive distension, from destruction of the septa, or from both causes combined (see Respiratory System ). In interstitial emphysema the air is infiltrated into the connective tissue beneath the pleura and between the pulmonary air-cells. The former variety is by far the more common, and appears to be capable of being produced by various causes, the chief of which are the following: I. Where a portion of the

NAPOLI, ITALY. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a serious, inherited childhood disease. The main symptoms are an abnormally thick mucus that clogs the lungs and results in breathing difficulties, failure to gain weight, repeated lung infections, and persistent cough and wheezing. It is estimated that about 1 in 2500 infants are born with the disease. There is ample evidence that it involves a combination of bacterial infection and inflammation. There is also evidence that leukotriene B4 (LTB-4) is involved in the enhanced influx of neutrophils (a special kind of white blood cell) into the lungs. Leukotriene B4, in turn, is synthesized from arachidonic acid. It is well established that the arachidonic acid content of red blood cell membranes can be significantly reduced by supplementation with EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), the main components of fish oil. Italian researchers decided to see if supplementation with fish oils could reduce the symptoms of CF. Their clinical trial involved 30 CF patients (10 boys and 20 girls with an average age of 12 years). The study participants supplemented with enteric-coated fish oil capsules providing about 1280 mg/day of EPA and about 930 mg/day of DHA as well as about 50 mg/day of vitamin E. They were also encouraged to increase their intake of seafood and continued on their routine supplementation program with multivitamins and pancreatic enzymes. As expected, EPA and DHA levels in red blood cell phospholipids increased significantly during the 8-month supplementation period with a commensurate decrease in arachidonic acid level. The researchers also observed a marked decrease in the level of the inflammatory marker IgG.

What Are the Symptoms of Emphysema?
Emphysema is a progressive disease that usually manifests itself in patients after 50 years of age. Emphysema is a subtype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD in the US, COLD in the United Kingdom). Most patients, except in those in whom disease is the result of a genetic deficiency (alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency), have variable manifestations of the different components of COPD which include:

Smoking tobacco causes 80% to 90% of COPD cases. An agent in tobacco smoke stimulates inflammation in the lungs, leading to destruction of the alveoli and narrowing of the airways. While smoking is related to most cases of emphysema, only 15% to 20% of smokers develop the disease. What other factors contribute to the development of "smokers emphysema" remains unclear. Familial emphysema, or alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency-related emphysema, is caused by the hereditary deficiency of a protein called alpha1-antitrypsin. This deficiency leads to uncontrolled destruction of the alveoli and emphysema. Occupational exposure to dust, fumes, and gases appears to contribute slightly to lung function decline and chronic bronchitis. The role of air pollution in COPD remains controversial.

    Emphysema Overview
Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath due to over-inflation of the alveoli (air sacs in the lung). In people with emphysema, the lung tissue involved in exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) is impaired or destroyed. Emphysema is included in a group of diseases called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD (pulmonary refers to the lungs). Emphysema is called an obstructive lung disease because airflow on exhalation is slowed or stopped because over-inflated alveoli do not exchange gases when a person breaths due to little or no movement of gases out of the alveoli.

Emphysema Emphysema is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that can get worse over time. It's usually caused by smoking. Having emphysema means some of the air sacs in your lungs are damaged, making it hard to breathe. Emphysema is part of a lung disease known as COPD. We offer lots of information on COPD, including emphysema, in our COPD section 1. Healthy alveolus
    2. Alveolus with emphysema What causes emphysema? Emphysema can be caused by one or a combination of these things:
    • Cigarette smoking: Most cases of emphysema are caused by cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoke reaches deep into the lungs and causes permanent damage . If you have emphysema from cigarettes, the best way to stop your lung damage is to quit smoking as soon as possible. It's never too late to quit smoking Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency: Some people have emphysema because of a rare genetic disorder called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency . People with alpha-1 are missing an enzyme that protects their lungs. Some people with alpha-1 deficiency get emphysema without ever having smoked. Other people get emphysema from the combination of smoking and having alpha-1 deficiency. Air pollution, including second-hand smoke

      Emphysema
Airways of the lung with emphysema People with COPD often have emphysema, whose hallmark symptom is shortness of breath. Smoking is the primary cause of emphysema. Emphysema refers to damage to the walls of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. This is the portion of the lung involved in the transfer of oxygen into the blood stream. This results in a smaller total number of air sacs.  Fewer air sacs means that the lungs are not able to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream as well.  Also the lungs may not be able to get rid of carbon dioxide as well.  The damaged lungs loose their stretchiness or elasticity, like a rubber party balloon that has been blown up and deflated many times.  Over time, this causes the air sacs, and the lungs, to become even bigger (hyperinflation). Hyperinflated lungs do not function as well as normal lungs. Back to COPD
