Emphysema It's not unusual for me to get desperate calls from people who know about my herbal expertise and want help for one serious disease or another. One such call came from a distant relative of mine. Her mother, age 72, had emphysema. A friend of the family had recommended "food-grade hydrogen peroxide" as a way of "getting more oxygen to the lungs." The sick woman's doctor hit the ceiling when he heard of this. My relative wanted to know what I thought of food-grade hydrogen peroxide, and I had to tell her that I had no idea what it was. I knew only that the liquid was a topical antiseptic and hair lightener.

Question: I am a 43 year old female who has been treated for hiatil hernia/gerd since 1991 nothing completely helped. I would really like to know your opinion of the meds the dr. has me on. At night it's worse of all i can't sleep because I have alot of trouble breathing. I have tried everything they told me to and I feel like I've swallowed a golf ball all the time. Answer: You didn't name the drugs. Usual drugs are drugs to decrease acid(Zantac, etc at first and then Prilosec or Prevacid) and then drugs to decrease reflux. This is usually propulsid since reglan(the other) can have long term neurologic side effects. Lastly is surgical repairs. Usually done through the laparoscope by putting a ring type structure around the esophagus and keeping the stomach in the abdomen. Emphysema [posted 8/6/98]
Question: I have suddenly developed a form of emphysema, with difficulty breathing, sometimes with very little exertion. At other times I can perform strenuous exercise with no apparent adverse effects. I was taking doxycycline about eight months ago and was trying to be careful in avoiding the sun. One day I went for a walk and forgot a hat on a sunny day and was stricken with exhaustion, high fever (105 degrees) and had to be taken to the emergency room. Is doxycycline a possible culprit for my emphysema?

Emphysema is one of a group of lung diseases called COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Emphysema causes damage to the alveoli (al-VEE-oh-lie) that cannot be reversed (cured). The alveoli are the tiny air sacs of the lungs where oxygen is put into the bloodstream. With emphysema, your lungs become less able to take in oxygen (good air) and get rid of carbon dioxide (deye-OKS-eyed). Carbon dioxide is an invisible gas that your body gives off as a waste product.
Another common form of COPD is chronic bronchitis (brong-KEYE-tis). With chronic bronchitis, the airways become inflamed (swollen) and make too much mucus, which also traps air in the lungs. People with emphysema often have chronic bronchitis also.

zSB(3,3) Emphysema is among a group of lung disorders classified as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The most common cause of emphysema is cigarette smoking, but other risk factors , such as secondhand smoke, air pollution or work-related exposure, may also play a part in the development of emphysema. In emphysema, the alveoli, or air sacs that lie deep within the lungs, become damaged and eventually burst, leaving large holes that trap air within the lungs. When air is trapped, it is difficult for the lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide, which can result in low oxygen (hypoxemia) and eventually high carbon dioxide (hypercapnia) levels in the blood.

Most of us started smoking back in the 40's and 50's. The money spent, even back then, by the tobacco companies, were in the billions of dollars, just in advertisements and cigarette handouts. Even now, their advertising dollars are directed to the younger generation. I have a disease know as emphysema. I would like to give all teenagers a brief description of my life as a person with emphysema. The facts that I provide to you will be a true-life experience of my trials and tribulation of my disease. Young people sometimes do not realize that smoking can destroy their future. They do not understand the problems that can develop from smoking. They do not understand the affect it can have on their health. When I was a young person, I never realized that smoking could diminish the most important factor in my life my breathing. When you can't breath you begin to realize how insignificant a cigarette can be in meeting your daily habit. I wish now I had never had a habit of smoking. I realize now breathing is a life function you can not live without, but cigarettes you can. If you had endured the pain I have suffered throughout the last ten years, you would never smoke a cigarette. I have had several collapsed lungs. I have had my back cut open, and had my lung partially removed. I have also spent months at a time in a hospital away from my family. The suffering is still not over; I now have to have my other lung partially removed. This procedure will prolong my life, for a later lung transplant.

Hyperhidrosis is a relatively common problem that affects many people. Although sweating is a normal bodily function, in some people it is unnecessarily excessive. Typically, people with hyperhidrosis have excessive sweating of their hands and sometimes in other parts of their body as well. In its most severe form, hyperhidrosis can cause crippling loss of self esteem. At the Center for Hyperhidrosis at Columbia University Medical Center, located in New York City, we have developed a multidisciplinary approach to the management of hyperhidrosis. Surgery very effectively eliminates hyperhidrosis, but there may be some unavoidable side effects. We believe that non-surgical methods to control hyperhidrosis should be tried before considering surgery. For that reason, our team includes not only Board Certified Thoracic Surgeons who specialize in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, but also Board Certified Dermatologists who are regarded amongst the best doctors in New York. Employing a team approach that offers both medical and surgical treatments, we believe all patients can obtain relief from symptoms. The Center for Hyperhidrosis at Columbia University Medical Center has been instrumental in modifying the surgical techniques for hyperhidrosis to minimize side effects and improve the results of surgical therapy. In cooperation with other centers where surgery for hyperhidrosis is performed, we continue to analyze surgical outcomes to further improve the results of surgery. Dr. Gorenstein not only performs surgery for hyperhidrosis, but is well recognized as a leader in the field of Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery, and is the director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center.

What are the causes or risk factors for emphysema?
    • The main cause of emphysema is smoking , which activates inflammatory cells in the lung. This inflammation causes; 1) swelling within the bronchioles, and 2) activation of enzymes called proteases which attack and destroy lung tissue (the alveolar wall structures).

    Emphysema Overview
Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath due to over-inflation of the alveoli (air sacs in the lung). In people with emphysema, the lung tissue involved in exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) is impaired or destroyed. Emphysema is included in a group of diseases called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD (pulmonary refers to the lungs). Emphysema is called an obstructive lung disease because airflow on exhalation is slowed or stopped because over-inflated alveoli do not exchange gases when a person breaths due to little or no movement of gases out of the alveoli.
