    Emphysema
Emphysema is a disease that will typically develop after a long period of attack on the lungs and airways (usually from smoke or fumes). Cigarette smoking is the primary cause of this condition. Possible symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and chronic mucus production. There are many ways to treat this condition; treatment options include medications, oxygen therapy, and surgery. However, the most important part of treatment is to stop smoking.
    Information on Emphysema
    What Is Emphysema?
Emphysema is a degenerative disease that usually develops after many years of assault on lung tissues from cigarette smoke or other toxins that pollute the air. These toxins destroy the small air sacs in the lungs, called alveoli, that stretch as they transport oxygen from the air to the blood and then shrink as they force out carbon dioxide. As a result, the lungs lose their elasticity, and exhaling becomes difficult as the damaged lungs trap air and cannot effectively exchange it with fresh air. As the damage progresses, the effort needed to breathe increases and, ultimately, each breath becomes labored.

Emphysema and Rebounding
Emphysema patients pulmonary function improved by very gentle rebounding. The physical therapy department at the University of Michigan medical school reported, about 1980, that the very mild up and down motion from gentle rebounding on a mini-trampoline would very significantly improve the functional breathing capacity of people with severe emphysema. This improvement was separate from the exercise portion of this motion since someone else could do the bouncing while the patient simply sat on the middle of the trampoline. Now, nearly 20 years later, when anyone contacts this department there is no longer anyone there who knows anything about this breakthrough.

Subcutaneous refers to the tissue beneath the cutis of the skin , and emphysema refers to trapped air. Since the air generally comes from the chest cavity , subcutaneous emphysema usually occurs on the chest, neck and face, where it is able to travel from the chest cavity along the fascia Subcutaneous emphysema has a characteristic crackling feel to the touch, a sensation that has been described as similar to touching Rice Krispies this sensation of air under the skin is known as subcutaneous crepitation Pneumomediastinum was first recognized as a medical entity by Laennec who reported it as a consequence of trauma in 1819. This complication has many causes. It was well described Dr. Louis Hamman in the 1939 in woman after labor and delivery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. It is sometimes called Hamman's syndrome though usually referred by thoracic surgeons and pulmonologists as Macklin's Syndrome. First reported by L. Macklin in 1939 and later by M.T. Macklin and C.C. Macklin in 1944, the latter two explained the pathophysiology in more detail.

At the arrow in the left lung (right side of picture) can be seen a faint bubbley section that looks like a ghostly bunch of grapes . This is emphysema. Emphysema is a disease of the lungs . It is one of the diseases that make up COPD which is a set of diseases where the flow of air in the lungs is obstructed. Emphysema is most often caused by smoking but can be caused by other diseases or have no known cause at all. It occurs when the very small air sacs (called the alveoli) at the ends of the airways in the lungs start to break down from many sacs to form much bigger sacs. The alveoli are the areas of the lung where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged into and out of the blood. Emphysema makes it hard for people to blow air out of the lungs because air gets trapped inside the broken alveoli due to the collapse of the walls. There is no cure at the moment for emphysema but treatment includes stopping smoking and taking medicines. Sometimes small amounts of oxygen are given to the patient but large amounts can cause problems. Sometimes sections of the lungs can collapse causing a pneumothorax where the lung comes away from the walls of the chest. This is a medical emergency and needs the patient to go to a hospital's emergency department. Emphysema can often lead to the death of the patient.

  • What Is It? Emphysema is a respiratory disease in which millions of the lungs' tiny air sacs (alveoli) stretch out of shape or rupture. As these thin, fragile air sacs become damaged or destroyed, the lungs lose their natural elasticity and are unable to empty easily. Emphysema is a progressive disease, which means it continues to get worse. As the condition progresses, the lungs also lose their ability to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Breathing becomes more difficult, and a person feels easily short of breath, like he or she is not getting enough air.

For unknown words also see the On-Line Medical Dictionary See this site (for a summary of potassium and copper nutrition) INTRODUCTION I have previously proposed that rheumatoid arthritis is accentuated by losses of potassium in our food supply and is largely a chronic potassium deficiency [Weber 1974] which causes alterations inside the cell of free amino acids [Iacobellis], interference by sodium with enzymes inside the cell as a result of the increased sodium there [Rubini], alterations of the potassium-sodium regulating hormone patterns which then affect other physiological processes, acidity in cell vacuoles, or some combination of these. I have come to believe that a disturbance of copper metabolism is the most serious symptom of these other processes. The aspect of copper physiology which is most potentially dangerous is its role in activating lysyl oxidase, the enzyme which cross links collagen and elastin connecting tissue [Sandberg, et al]. Copper's effect on elastin is especially important because elastin gains its strength primarily from cross linking [Carnes1971(discusses copper aminases)] and because elastin is the main material of several important organs, which include blood vessels, upper spinal discs, lungs, and

        Symptoms
Emphysema (pronounced EM-fa-zema) is a degenerative lung disease that develops after many years of lung tissue exposure to cigarette smoke or other toxins that pollute the air. When you inhale, oxygen travels down your airway, into your lungs, and into tiny air sacs in the lungs called alveoli. The alveoli push the oxygen to the heart so that it can be distributed throughout the body, and it pushes out carbon dioxide so that it can be exhaled. Emphysema is one of a group of lung diseases, referred to as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) , which interferes with normal breathing. Emphysema sometimes occurs in conjunction with chronic bronchitis , another COPD. The difference between the diseases is that emphysema is the result of damaged alveoli, and chronic bronchitis is an inflammatory condition. The diseases share common symptoms and treatment goals. Even though emphysema can not be cured, treatment can help to ease symptoms and improve quality of life. Top Of Page
        Causes
As each of us grows older, the air sacs, or alveoli, in our lungs grow weaker. This degeneration is emphysema, and age leads to it, but smokers destroy their alveoli at a more rapid rate. That makes smokers at greatest risk for developing the disease at a much younger age. Smoking is the number one cause of emphysema.

    Emphysema Causes
Cigarette smoking is by far the most dangerous behavior that causes people to develop emphysema, and it is also the most preventable cause. Other risk factors include a deficiency of an enzyme called alpha-1-antitrypsin, air pollution, airway reactivity, heredity, male sex, and age.
    • The importance of cigarette smoking as a risk factor for developing emphysema cannot be overemphasized. Cigarette smoke contributes to this disease process in two ways. It destroys lung tissue, which results in the obstruction of air flow, and it causes inflammation and irritation of airways that can add to air flow obstruction.

Chemicals in red wine could be the next treatment for chronic lung disease. Faquier County, Virginia Trawling the wine cellar for potential cures for human ailments in the same way we search tropical rainforests and oceans for useful drugs has yielded a new treatment for chronic lung disease.
Researchers from Imperial College, London have reported in the British Medical Journal that resveratrol, a component of red wine, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help treat a common type of lung disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an irreversible condition where the lungs progressively deteriorate, making it difficult to breathe. The term is used to describe the airflow obstruction that is associated mainly with emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
The major risk factor for COPD is smoking and the only way to slow the disease is to stop smoking, use asthma medication and get some good old fashioned exercise.
Now researchers have found that resveratrol, a polyphenol antioxidant found in the skins of red fruits such as grapes, may suppress the disease.
