Causes, incidence, and risk factors Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of emphysema. Tobacco smoke and other pollutants are thought to cause the release of chemicals from within the lungs that damage the walls of the air sacs. This damage becomes worse over time. Persons with this disease have air sacs in the lungs that are unable to fill with fresh air. This affects the oxygen supply to the body. A naturally occurring substance in the lungs called alpha-1 antitrypsin may protect against this damage. People with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency are at an increased risk for this disease. Symptoms Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease include the following:

Emphysema
Emphysema is a respiratory disease characterized by a sensation of a heavy weight on the chest and symptoms such as gasping for breath-the presence of these two symptoms signals advanced pulmonary emphysema in the affected person. Emphysema affects the lungs and the disease occurs in the most complex tissues of the lungs, which are the alveolar sacs. These sacs are where the actual exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occur in the lungs. Breathing becomes difficult during the disease because as the elastic alveolar sacs overstretch, and this expansion makes it difficult to exhale fully. Thus some air is always trapped within the sacs and this trapped air blocks most fresh air from entering the sacs, less and less oxygen reaches the blood with each breath as the fresh supply of air is always minimal due to the hindrance given by trapped air in the sacs. The early symptoms of emphysema develop slowly, and respiration becomes difficult only during such times as when a person exercises heavily and when he or she walks up and down a flight of stairs. The consequent breathlessness often comes along with a dry or rattling sounding cough as symptoms. Advanced stages of emphysema are easily identifiable as the person outwardly possesses air filled and barrel shaped chest as a distinguishing feature or physical sign. If opportunistic lung

Emphysema
Emphysema is a lung disease involving damage to the air sacs (alveoli). There is progressive destruction of alveoli and the surrounding tissue that supports the alveoli. With more advanced disease, large air cysts develop where normal lung tissue used to be. Air is trapped in the lungs due to lack of supportive tissue which decreases oxygenation.

Emphysema
Definition
Emphysema is a chronic lung disease in which air sacs and the surrounding lung tissues are destroyed. The air sacs may be collapsed or over inflated and stretched out. This is where gas exchange occurs in the lungs. This breakdown of the walls of the air sacs causes airflow limitation in the lungs that in most cases is not completely reversible. The most common cause of emphysema is cigarette smoking, although rare forms of emphysema may occur in non-smokers. Emphysema may be present with other lung diseases, such as chronic bronchitis and asthma. Like emphysema, these diseases are made worse by cigarette smoking. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are often grouped together and commonly called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Exposure to air pollution and noxious particles or gases could also cause or worsen these conditions.
Symptoms
Symptoms associated with emphysema include:
  • Shortness of breath Fatigue Cough Wheezing Reduced exercise capacity Frequent exacerbations and respiratory infections Depression and anxiety Weight loss
People with 'mild' emphysema have symptoms only with exertion, such as extended walks, exercise, etc. Those with moderate or severe emphysema maybe have symptoms with little exertion (such as getting around the house) or during activities of daily living or even at rest.
