From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article is about the type of reference work. For other uses, see Encyclopedia (disambiguation) Brockhaus Enzyklopädie in 1902 An encyclopedia (also spelled encyclopaedia or encyclopædia ) is a type of reference work , a compendium holding a summary of information from either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge. Encyclopedias are divided into articles or entries, which are usually accessed alphabetically by article name. Encyclopedia entries are longer and more detailed than those in most dictionaries Generally speaking, unlike dictionary entries, which focus on linguistic information about words , encyclopedia articles focus on factual information to cover the thing or concept for which the article name stands. Encyclopedias have existed for around 2,000 years; the oldest still in existence, Naturalis Historia , was written in Roman times by Pliny the Elder . The modern encyclopedia evolved out of dictionaries around the 17th century. Historically, some encyclopedias were contained in one volume , but some, such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica , became huge multi-volume works. Some modern encyclopedias are electronic and are often freely available, for example

Home Library French Literature Companion Encyclopedias have been composed in France from the High Middle Ages on. The earliest examples were in Latin, in particular the Speculum majus of Vincent of Beauvais , which enjoyed great success even beyond the invention of printing, the last edition being produced in 1624. Early French encyclopedic writings include the poems of Philippe de Thaon [see Anglo-norman Literature ], the versified Ymage du monde (1247) of Gautier de Metz, and in particular the prose Li Livres dou trésor of Brunetto Latini . Brunetto, like his counterparts who write in Latin, arranges his material by subject-matter, but sometimes uses alphabetical order within sections. There is something of a lull in French encyclopedic production at the time of the Renaissance, although one can point to such compilations as those of Belon du Mans and Binet . The latter's Essai des merveilles shows the way an encyclopedia can be used as a source-book by writers and orators.

The word "encyclopedia" is Latin and comes from Greek . The words "εγκύκλιος παιδεία", enkyklios paideia mean "in a circle of teaching". It is from "εγκύκλιος", in a circle from "κύκλος" circle and "παιδεία", meaning teaching The word "εγκύκλιος" can also mean "general": perhaps the people who made the Latin name "encyclopedia" did not understand the Greek word well.
