Endometriosis and Infertility Send Link Endometriosis, a cause of female infertility, is a condition in which endometrial tissue, the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus, grows outside the uterus and attaches to other organs in the abdominal cavity such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Endometriosis is a progressive disease that tends to get worse over time and can reoccur after treatment. Symptoms include painful menstrual periods, abnormal menstrual bleeding and pain during or after sexual intercourse. The endometrial tissue outside your uterus responds to your menstrual cycle hormones the same way the tissue inside your uterus responds - it swells and thickens, then sheds to mark the beginning of the next cycle. The blood that is shed from the endometrial tissue in your abdominal cavity has no place to go, resulting in pools of blood causing an inflammation that forms scar tissue. The scar tissue can block the fallopian tubes or interfere with ovulation. Another result of endometriosis is the formation of ovarian cysts called endometrioma that may also interfere with ovulation.

Endometriosis
Endometriosis Overview
Endometriosis is a common disorder of the female reproductive organs and is the leading cause of chronic pelvic pain in women.
  • In women who have endometriosis, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) develops in other areas of the body, most commonly within the pelvic area or the abdominal cavity. The endometrial tissue may attach itself to the ovaries, the outside of the uterus, the intestines, or other abdominal organs. Rarely, endometriosis occurs outside the abdominal cavity, such as in the brain or lungs. Endometriosis may also develop in surgical scars following surgery on pelvic organs. The term "implant" is used to refer to a specific area of endometriosis in a certain tissue.

Endometriosis
What is endometriosis?
The word "endometriosis" (say: "end-oh-me-tree-oh-sis") means a problem with the lining of the uterus. The lining is called the endometrium or endometrial tissue. Normally, every month when you have your period, the lining comes out in your menstrual flow.
Endometrial tissue is usually only inside your uterus. However, if you have endometriosis, tissue from the lining of the uterus may move through the fallopian tubes and get on your ovaries, in your pelvis, on your bladder or in other areas. When you have your period, this tissue swells and bleeds, just like the lining of your uterus. This is often painful, and scar tissue can form in your pelvic area.

Email Email Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial lining of the uterus attaches itself to other organs outside of the uterus. During menstruation, the endometrial lining is shed from the uterus, but the lining that has attached outside the uterus has no way of leaving the body. This lining continues to be aggravated at the times of ovulation and menstruation and can break down and bleed, tear away, or form painful scar tissue. These implants or lesions grow abnormally leading to pain and discomfort. According to the Endometriosis Research Center, this disease affects more than 7 million women in the US and is the leading cause of female infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and gynecologic surgeries.
      What causes endometriosis?
There is no known cause for endometriosis. Some experts have come up with a few possibilities, but nothing has been conclusively proven. One possible cause of endometriosis is that during menstruation, menstrual tissue backs up into the fallopian tubes, enters the abdominal cavity, and implants. Most physicians believe that all women experience some type of back up at some point, but women who have immune problems go on to develop endometriosis.

Helium Thermal Ablation of Endometriosis
Helica Instruments Ltd, manufacture equipment used in a treatment called Helium Thermal Ablation. This procedure has been available since 1995 and has now been carried out on over 16,000 patients. Helium Thermal Ablation has proven to be a safe and effective way in the treating of endometriosis.
The generator unit (the Helica TC machine) is now in 120 hospitals throughout the UK. This means that while endometriosis is being diagnosed during a procedure called a diagnostic laparoscopy, the disease can then be treated in the early stages of development thereby avoiding further visits to the operating theatre.
The Treatment
Using keyhole surgery (Laparoscopy) the Consultant Gynaecologist can cauterise (ablate) the affected area, which may give instant pain relief to the patient. Endometriosis is sometimes found on or over some extremely sensitive organs. Helium Thermal Ablation can be used to treat these affected areas.
