What are endometriosis symptoms?
Most women who have endometriosis, in fact, do not have symptoms. Of those who do experience symptoms, the common symptoms are pain (usually pelvic) and infertility . Pelvic pain usually occurs during or just before menstruation and lessens after menstruation. Some women experience painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia) or cramping during intercourse, and or/pain during bowel movements and/or urination. Even pelvic examination by a doctor can be painful. The pain intensity can change from month to month, and vary greatly among women. Some women experience progressive worsening of symptoms, while others can have resolution of pain without treatment.

Endometriosis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome Q: I have endometriosis and now after 5 years, I have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).  The doctor said I have some endometriosis on my bowel. How common is this for women?
-R.
Dr. Donnica:
Endometriosis is relatively common, but commonly misunderstood.  It affects one in 15 women, or 5 million Americans! Four in 10 of these women will have infertility as a result. While endometriosis is marked by severe cramping before and during menses, some women don't experience any symptoms. In most cases, women are not affected until they reach their twenties or thirties. What causes endometriosis?  Simply put, some of the lining cells of the womb flow backward into the pelvis and implant on other tissues, such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes.  Being estrogen sensitive, these implants react cyclically. They can grow and cause pain, abnormal bleeding, and tubal blockage.  There are many things we still don't understand about endometriosis: what causes it, why the symptoms are not necessarily related to the size or location of the implants, or what can be done to prevent it. Endometriosis is also difficult to diagnose conclusively without a surgical procedure called a laparoscopy. A laparoscopy allows your doctor to look into your abdomen and pelvis with a lit tube through a small incision beneath your belly button.

Definition
Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that behaves like the cells lining the uterus (endometrium) grows in other areas of the body, causing pain, irregular bleeding, and possible infertility The tissue growth (implant) typically occurs in the pelvic area, outside of the uterus, on the ovaries, bowel, rectum, bladder, and the delicate lining of the pelvis. However, the implants can occur in other areas of the body, too.

Endometriosis
Endometriosis Overview
Endometriosis is a common disorder of the female reproductive organs and is the leading cause of chronic pelvic pain in women.
  • In women who have endometriosis, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) develops in other areas of the body, most commonly within the pelvic area or the abdominal cavity. The endometrial tissue may attach itself to the ovaries, the outside of the uterus, the intestines, or other abdominal organs. Rarely, endometriosis occurs outside the abdominal cavity, such as in the brain or lungs. Endometriosis may also develop in surgical scars following surgery on pelvic organs. The term "implant" is used to refer to a specific area of endometriosis in a certain tissue.

Endometriosis
The uterus is lined by a layer of tissue called the endometrium; these endometrial tissues normally start building up over the uterine walls every month in preparation for implantation of an embryo. The flow during menstruation is simply the shedding of this excessive tissue along with blood if implantation does not occur. The endometrial tissue for some as yet unidentified reasons at times will get detached from the uterine walls, after detachment from the underlying uterine tissue, these often spread out towards many different areas of the body-this causes a lot of severe problems to the person. The detached tissues has thus been detected in areas of the body such as the ovaries , it has been found along the fallopian tubes, it has been detected in the urinary bladder, and at times in very strange places such as within the lungs, in the tissues along elbows, in the head and the brain, and along the nasal passages. The problem is that detached endometrial tissues may continue to respond to the fluctuating levels of hormone in the woman’s body even when it is fully detached and far away from the uterus. Bleeding in such tissues will still occur during the coming of menstruation even when it is attached to other sites in the uterus or in the ovaries and the fallopian tubes among others. The problem with this abnormal bleeding is that it lacks the avenues for blood produced flowing out from the system. This released blood accumulates and stagnates in the areas where the endometrium tissues has traveled, resulting in serious inflammation, in the production of

A Gynecologist's Second Opinion
Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecological conditions in the United States. We don't know exactly how many American women suffer from this disease, but best estimates set the number at about 5 million. Women of all ages, races and backgrounds have been found to have endometriosis. Recent information suggests that the disease is becoming more prevalent. Some 2 million women had hysterectomies for pelvic pain related to endometriosis between 1965 and 1984. Over that time period, the number of hysterectomies performed per year for this condition doubled. In addition, the proportion of all hysterectomies performed because of endometriosis rose from approximately 10% to 20%. Endometriosis can also effect fertility, and about 30% of infertile women are found to have endometriosis. The symptoms and problems related to endometriosis lead to the hospitalization of a substantial number of women every year.

Endometriosis
What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition. It was described in medical literature more than 300 years ago and has since been recognized as a chronic, painful, and often progressive disease in women. It occurs when cells from the mucus membrane lining the uterus (endometrium) form implants that attach, grow, and function outside the uterus, generally in the pelvic region. The causes of endometriosis are unknown. Some have claimed that endometriosis can be cured. Unfortunately, this is not always true. Presently, the most effective treatment for endometriosis is surgical eradication of the disease using techniques such as video laparoscopic excision and eradication with high technology such as a CO laser, hydro dissection ultrasound , or radiofrequency . An experienced surgeon is able to use different methods, such as electrocautery , lasers, scissors, or ultrasound, to completely eradicate the disease by these minimally invasive techniques. Whilst there is so much more support available now, we feel that we can still make a difference by keeping this site going, we are not or affiliated with, any company or charity and my husband and I run the site in our own time with the help of voluntary donations from the now well established community that use this website.
