In many states, legislatures and public utility commissions have opened competition for electricity and natural gas supply. These measures allow you, the consumer of energy, to choose a supplier. Meanwhile, the delivery of the energy is still regulated and remains the responsibility of the local utility company. Before deregulation, your local utility company provided all parts of your energy service (generation, transmission and distribution). With competition, these parts are separated onto different companies.
    • Generation is the production of energy through power plants using either nuclear, fossil fuel (oil, coal, or natural gas) or renewable (hydro, wind, solar, biomass) generation technology. This component is not regulated by the public utility commissions. Northeast Energy Partners can help you with this component. Because of competition, we can get you lower prices, offer you renewable energy options, and provide you with customer service benefits you are not currently receiving. Transmission and distribution is the actual delivery of electricity across poles and wires and natural gas through pipelines to your business. These services are provided to you by your local utility company, which is responsible for maintaining the poles and wires, or pipelines, and responding to emergencies and power outages. The public utility commission continues to regulate transmission and distribution to ensure the safety and reliability of your services.

What does energy deregulation mean to you?
Energy Deregulation means choice. You are now able to choose who you purchase your natural gas or electricity from.
Before energy deregulation, you were forced to buy your energy from the local utility company; the rates were regulated; and you had no control over pricing. Today not only can you choose from a number of independent third party providers but pricing options are also more plentiful. back to top Helpful Energy Links 12305 Old Huffmeister Road; Cypress, TX 77429-3231 Toll Free: 866-642-4368 Houston: 281-664-2020 Fax: 281-664-2028 Translate Our Site - Click on Flag d Legal Notice TheEasyWebSolution.com

Energy Deregulation and Your Business
Fact: 32 of our 50 States have adopted some form of Energy Deregulation.  Of those 32 States, 13 States and the District of Columbia have adopted both natural gas and electricity deregulation.   In those deregulated states electric and natural gas utilities were once operating as regulated monopolies, supplying and delivering such energy to you.  Through the process of energy deregulation, the combined services that were offered by local utilities have been split into two parts supply and delivery, with the supply portion open to competition. Integrated Energy Services creates an environment where energy service companies (ESCOs) compete for your business.  Competition means more options and the ability to find the best value for your businesses energy dollar. Most importantly selecting an energy service company WILL NOT change the reliability of your energy supply.

San Diego Energy Deregulation Info
Here are some useful links (and my deregulation diary) to educate individuals about the fun and games of energy deregulation and energy conservation. System Conditions - The California ISO Zip Code
The Energy Information Administration , offers details about energy deregulation. If you want to check out alternative energy providers in the San Diego area , then check out the Energy Guide web site or Wattage Monitor . They have listing of alternative energy providers. National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners has a listing of all the state commissioners. The web a great source of information, showing how to save energy. For example: the DOE has , the State of California has specific consumer information and the University of Southwestern Louisiana has no cost energy saving ideas If you like simple to understand things (like tax forms), then you may like the way This page like the rest of this site is a constant work in progress. Now that I installed a chat room, I hope people post their own opinions on energy deregulation and experiences with alternate utilities so I can tabulate the information (and post it for the benefit of all). To get the ball rolling so to speak, since I consider myself a green capitalist, I have mixed feeling about the unprecedented rise of gas and electrical prices in the San Diego area. On one hand I think the rise in energy prices is good because it will force people to adopt energy conservation habits long since ignored because energy costs do not really reflect the true cost to the environment and public health. On the other hand it is shocking to pay lots more money (than usual) for gas and electricity, money which could be used for cool capitalist toys and capital improvement.

home about energy learning center about deregulation About Deregulation Storm Central Balanced solution - Carolinas Balanced solution - Florida Learning Center ... FERC Matters In the last few years, many states have begun to rewrite the rules to increase competition among electricity producers. Other states have been studying the issue. The basic idea is to deregulate the generation of electricity and allow consumers to choose where they buy their power (as they can choose their long-distance phone company). Local utility distributors would continue to deliver the power, for a fee, over their lines. This form of deregulation is being decided on a state-by-state basis. Each state faces a different energy situation and is taking a different approach. In general, areas with high electricity rates (like California and the Northeast) have been the first ones to move in this direction. Early Results The first few states began implementing their redesigned electricity markets in the late 1990s, and most are still in a transition period. So the jury is still out on the long-term pros and cons. But the early experience has shown:
  • Redesigning electricity markets is even more complicated than expected.

Texas Energy Deregulation
Understanding energy deregulation and how it can benefit your business is the biggest challenge facing consumers. Ambit Energy Energy Deregulation Opportunity Is Electric! Future Is Bright! Our Vision
Deregulation is changing the retail energy market. Competition is replacing monopolies. Consumers now have a choice of providers. We want to be the provider of choice for customers who are excited about the opportunity to save money and improve their level of service. We are confident that in putting our customers first we can realize our vision to become the finest and most respected retail energy provider in the United States. Texas and New York now allow competition for both residential and commercial customers. Other states will be following in the months and years to come. The residential market in Texas is over $24 billion annually, in New York it is over $10 billion annually, and over $1.6 trillion nationwide.
In New York
In 1996 the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) began to deregulate the state's electric industry. Today the New York electricity industry is open to competition, which allows customers to choose who supplies their electricity. New energy suppliers in New York are known as energy service companies, or "ESCOs." In New York's deregulated energy market, local utilities are required to offer electricity users a choice among ESCOs competing for retail electricity customers. The local utility will continue to deliver electricity to homes and businesses and will continue to be regulated by the PSC.

    Energy Deregulation
In the past, one utility provided the three components of your energy service: generation, transmission and distribution. Legislatures and the public utility commissions ( PUC ) of many states have created competition for electricity and natural gas supply. This allows consumers to choose their energy supplier, while the delivery of the energy is still regulated and is the responsibility of the local utility company.
    Deregulated
Generation : With deregulation, you’re able to go direct and choose the company that produces energy, or the company who buys it on your behalf to sell to you.
    Regulated
Transmission and Distribution : This is the actual delivery of electricity across poles and wires and natural gas through pipelines to your business by your local utility company. Your utility company is responsible for maintaining the poles and wires, or pipelines, and responding to emergencies and power outages. The public utility regulates transmission and distribution to ensure the safety and reliability of your services.

Energy Deregulation
On Oct. 31, 1985 , in the Halloween Agreement, Ontario’s natural gas market was deregulated. The province’s electricity market followed almost 17 years later, deregulating on May 1, 2002. Prior to this time, energy was delivered by monopolies - regulated utilities offering only a one-size-fits-all product. Consumers had no choice but to purchase energy from the utility. Today, consumers have a choice. Deregulation creates choice . Ontarians don’t need to stay with the utility for natural gas or electricity. They have the ability to shop for a supplier. Deregulation fosters competition . Energy retailers must offer competitive prices, better service and innovative solutions to retain and add customers. This gives both residential and commercial consumers the opportunity to pick the purchasing strategy that best suits their needs. Deregulation has opened the energy market . Gateway Energy Services Ltd. is able to supply natural gas and electricity at competitive rates to our customers because we operate in a competitive retail market. We purchase energy for our customers and arrange for its delivery and billing with the utility. The utility remains responsible for services such as equipment maintenance and emergency response.
