  • THE SCHOOL ADMISSION ACADEMICS ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Department prepares students by teaching the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing English so that the students can function in mainstream classes, as well as in the culture of the School and the United States. Through a student-centered curriculum that emphasizes the use of language in multiple contexts, students learn to communicate effectively, both orally and on paper. REQUIREMENTS New international students are required to take the Departmental ESL Placement Test at the beginning of the school year. Course placement will be determined by this test. Four years of English are required for the Walnut Hill diploma. Courses taken in ESL are applied toward this requirement. International students who place into ESL Intermediate may have a grade placement determined by their level of English proficiency. Students placed in this class must by necessity spend a majority of their academic time studying English in order to prepare for other coursework in the program and thus cannot have a grade placement higher than the 9th or 10th grade. COURSES IN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE ESL Intermediate
    ESL Introduction to Academics
Taken in conjunction with ESL Intermediate, this semester-long course prepares students to participate more effectively in the academic programs at WHS. The course is designed to provide familiarity with various academic courses and examine major academic skills, concepts, vocabulary, and study methods used in humanities and science courses.
