    HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Most of the earliest records relating to Jewish women entrepreneurs provide evidence only of prosperous women. This is because deeds and ownership lists were the transactions most often recorded in ancient societies, and it is this kind of information that remains. Such documents, preserved either in stone or on papyrus, reveal women as property owners, philanthropists and buyers and sellers of real estate or large amounts of movable goods. There are records of women property owners as early as the fifth century B.C.E. One was Mibtahiah, who lived in the Jewish colony of Elephantine. She bought and sold her properties and also owned valuable goods that she disposed of independently. Later records, from rural Egypt in the second century C.E., show Jewish women who owned large herds of livestock. In that same century, documents from the Cave of Letters, uncovered by archeologists in the 1960s, inform us of Babatha , a woman from Judea who owned property and lent money to her husband.

UPDATE
Forbes magazine chronicles the fight over "entrepreneur" in its March 20, 2000, issue! Read reporter Doug Donovan's article, "Tongue Tied," online.
SUMMARY: A California-based company, Entrepreneur Media, Inc., is attempting to control the use of a dictionary word in its generic sense though harassing legal threats and intimidating lawsuits. Entrepreneurs.com previously has been the target of such harassment from Entrepreneur Media. Although Entrepreneur Media dropped its suit when we demonstrated that we had the financial resources to resist a groundless legal attack, others have not been so fortunate. We have recently learned of their unfortunate stories and feel compelled to help other entrepreneurs in any way we can. BACKGROUND: According to the Oxford English Dictionary , the word "entrepreneur" has been an active part of the English language since 1828. In 1852, the OED notes the first use of entrepreneur with the meaning it retains today "one who undertakes an enterprise; one who owns and manages a business; a person who takes the risk of profit or loss." American history is rich with tales of entrepreneurs, men and women whose dreams, hard work and perseverance have given us numerous technological marvels and a thriving, diverse economy.

The Top 50 Bloggers on Cloud Computing
Ever since I first published here my tentative list of Top Players in the Cloud Computing Ecosystem - now expanded to a list of 250 and growing daily thanks to community feedback via my Twitter account (@jg21) and a very kind mention by ReadWriteWeb - there have been suggestions that another prism through which to view cloud computing might be that of people rather than companies. Now Michael Sheehan has encouraged me to Just Do It, so let me get started...as per the previous Top Cloud Players list, this list will a work-in-progress and is totally porous, so don't hesitate to ping or tweet me if there are folks I have missed. In particular if you are a journalist whose "beat" is Cloud Computing, please let's be hearing from you, and we can maybe widen this list from Cloud Bloggers to Cloud Commentators. For now though let's get started. In alphabetical order - to avoi... ( more

Sunday Funnies: Would You Invest in LeBron James?
Posted Oct 17th 2010 2:40PM by Sheldon Liber RSS feed
Filed under: Bad News Management Rants and Raves Competitive Strategy ... Entrepreneurs If the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player, LeBron James , was a stock, would you find it was of any value as an investment? From my perspective, it would not be, unless Mr. James were to make some key moves off the court to mirror his talent on the court. The first thing I would tell him is to SHUT UP! He needs to recognize that it is only natural for people in Cleveland to feel betrayed after years of support and adulation ended in a sputter, with nothing to fill the void. It is only natural for them to feel even worse after the self-serving arrogant way they were informed during a totally over-the-top television special. Social entrepreneurship
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Social entrepreneurship is the work of a social entrepreneur . A social entrepreneur recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize, create and manage a venture to achieve social change (a social venture ). Whereas a business entrepreneur typically measures performance in profit and return, a social entrepreneur focuses on creating social capital. Thus, the main aim of social entrepreneurship is to further social and environmental goals. However, whilst social entrepreneurs are most commonly associated with the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors , this need not necessarily be incompatible with making a profit.
