Decent Work in America : Report Summary
What are the factors that make for a decent work environment and how do the conditions of work vary in different parts of the United States? To address these and similarly important questions in a clear and accessible way, we have developed a new approach for measuring the work environment on a state-bystate basis throughout the United States (including the District of Columbia) – the Work Environment Index (WEI). This is the first installment of the WEI, and we intend to update it every year. The WEI is a unique social indicator that brings together in one measure a range of factors that, in combination, define the quality of our working lives in the U.S. today. The WEI examines three basic dimensions of the U.S. work environment: job opportunities job quality and workplace fairness . We rank the 50 states and the District of Columbia according to these three categories. Based on our measures of job opportunities, job quality, and workplace fairness, we find that, overall, Delaware offers the best relative work environment in the United States. Other states with high WEI rankings include New Hampshire, Minnesota, Vermont and Iowa. The states with the lowest WEI rankings are Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Utah, South Carolina and Mississippi. Our state-by-state WEI ranking enables us to consider a crucial and widely-discussed issue: Do the states that provide a relatively decent work environment end up paying a penalty in terms of their overall economic climate? For example, do states that rank high according to the WEI score poorly in terms of their overall growth rate, the pace at which new businesses

Commonly referred to as DG Environment , the objective of the Directorate-General is to protect, preserve and improve the environment for present and future generations . To achieve this it proposes policies that ensure a high level of environmental protection in the European Union and that preserve the quality of life of EU citizens. The DG makes sure that Member States correctly apply EU environmental law . In doing so it investigates complaints made by citizens and non-governmental organisations and can take legal action if it is deems that EU law has been infringed. In certain cases DG Environment represents the European Union in environmental matters at international meetings such as the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity. The DG also finances projects that contribute to environmental protection in the EU. Since 1992 some 2,600 projects have received some financing from

Egyptian Environment for Kids - what kind of weather did they have in ancient Egypt? what kinds of plants and animals lived there?
    Egyptian Environment
Egypt has a very special environment, which has played a very big part in Egyptian history . Basically Egypt is really part of the Sahara Desert , which runs all across the top of Africa. But the Sahara is a really dry desert, and for the most part people do not live in the desert (though actually the Sahara was not as dry in antiquity as it is now). But even in antiquity it hardly ever rained in Egypt. The reason people did live in Egypt, though, was that the Nile River runs through the middle of Egypt. The Nile is a big river. It starts in the rain forest south of Ethiopia, south of Egypt, near the A in Africa on this map, and it flows north into the Mediterranean Sea. (If it seems funny to you that a river flows north, so that it looks like the water is going up on the map, you're not alone. Lots of people find this hard to remember). Water from the Nile makes it possible to grow crops in Egypt, especially

A ratio describing the relative abundance of different types of retail
food outlets in a given area. The RFEI is constructed by dividing the
total number of fast-food restaurants and convenience stores by the total
number of supermarkets and produce vendors (produce stores and farmers
markets) in the area. The result is the ratio of retail food outlets that offer little in the way of fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods to those in which fruits and vegetables are readily available.

    Environment
In many ways, America's environment has improved dramatically since the first Earth Day in 1970. The quality of the nation's air has improved substantially with respect to many pollutants, particularly lead after it was phased out as a gasoline additive several years ago. Water pollution from "point sources" like industrial facilities and wastewater treatment plants has seen similar improvement, though pollution from "nonpoint" sources principally urban, suburban and agriculture runoff has proved an intractable problem of ongoing concern. While these and other domestic environmental issues draw continued attention, however, many environmentalists are now placing international issues at the top of their list of priorities. Issues like global warming, population growth, deforestation, and the continued loss of many species of plants and animals have reached increasing prominence on the environmental agenda. These issues are not without controversy. While few people consider themselves anti-environment, many environmental policies draw considerable opposition from those who are adversely affected economically. Domestically, industries complain of a heavy regulatory burden and question the benefits of new environmental proposals. Property owners complain that their rights are being infringed. There is also significant conflict in the international arena, where poor, developing nations argue that they can not afford new environmental restrictions and that rich, industrialized nations, who have until recently been the world's primary polluters, should shoulder most of the burden.

Work Environment Index Strategy for Selection:
The Work Environment Index is the average of all scores reported on an Work Environment survey. It is the blend of delighted to dissatisfied employees. Its strength is that it is a concise summary of all responses. Its weakness is that it communicates less about the nature of satisfaction than other indices. The average score does not represent any one person or group within the whole. It is not as useful an index as others for understanding the dynamics of the workplace environment. It does not forecast what future satisfaction levels may be without intervention. The component parts that construct this overall average need to be understood in order to build an effective action plan for improvement. Therefore, the Overall Satisfaction index needs to be used in conjunction with one or more other indices described in this model. Work Environment Index Defined: This index is the overall average of all responses made by all survey respondents. It is most accurate to calculate the average by summing the value of all responses and dividing the sum by the number of responses. It is less accurate to calculate the figure by striking intermediary averages, e.g., the average by survey form, summing the intermediary averages and dividing by their number to arrive at an overall average.
