  • Focus of EE History Moroccan students watching birds at Nador lagoon during the activities organised by SEO/BirdLife during the World Wetlands Day in Morocco Environmental education (EE) refers to organized efforts to teach about how natural environments function and, particularly, how human beings can manage their behavior and ecosystems in order to live sustainably . The term is often used to imply education within the school system, from primary to post-secondary. However, it is sometimes used more broadly to include all efforts to educate the public and other audiences, including print materials, websites, media campaigns, etc. Related disciplines include outdoor education and experiential education. Environmental education is a learning process that increases people's knowledge and awareness about the environment and associated challenges, develops the necessary skills and expertise to address the challenges, and fosters attitudes, motivations, and commitments to make informed decisions and take responsible action (UNESCO, Tbilisi Declaration, 1978).

Building a Sustainable Future -
NOTE: This Environmental Education report focuses on our work in Fiji, Cambodia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Australia. The Rapid Assessment of Perceptions (RAP) was undertaken in rural communities in Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Fiji. In examining environmental issues related to health, making a living and culture, RAP participants articulated a wealth of detailed information concerning their perceptions of problems, decision making, hopes for the future, and community organisation and capacity. The RAP revealed that there is a wide diversity of issues that concern community members that are specific to each community. However, the RAP also showed that the four countries share similar issues of concern.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
A tool to make this world a better place to live
What is Environmental Education?
Environmental education (EE) properly understood, should constitute a comprehensive lifelong education, one responsive to changes in a rapidly changing world. It should prepare the individual for life, through an understanding of the major problems of the contemporary world, and the provision of skills and attributes needed to play a productive role towards improving life and protecting the environment with due regard given to ethical values. ( UNESCO, 1977)
What are its goals?
EE aims to develop:
  • awareness, sensitivity and a positive attitude towards environment. knowledge and understanding of the ecological processes. greater participation in activities that help to overcome environmental challenges.
Why do we need to look at EE now?
A clean and healthy environment is quintessential for the very survival of the human race. A vast country like India faces formidable challenges in the form of exploding population, widespread poverty, recurring natural disasters and a dwindling natural resource base. A majority of the population lives below the poverty line and are illiterate. They depend exclusively on our diminishing natural resource base. So we need to think and act now.
Against this background, Environmental Education (EE) becomes indispensable.
