It regulates climate and weather and provides food and energy resources for humans worldwide. All life on Earth is dependent upon its health. More than half of all Americans live within 50 miles of the coast, but whether near or far our lives are inextricably linked to the ocean. Learn more about EE Week 2011

What Kinds of Degrees Are Out There?
Here are a few perspectives colleges and degree programs take on environmental education. The Science Perspective. The most obvious choice for many looking to go into environmental education is an Environmental Science degree. These degrees sometimes have a hard-science focus that looks at ecological studies, how human interference affects environmental systems, and aspects of biology. Other degree programs may have a more broad approach that includes social sciences and the humanities. The Engineering Perspective. The Policy Perspective. This degree prepares you to work in the government in a public policy position that affects environmental issues. Degrees in this area of environmental study can be expected to provide you with a broad understanding of the science behind sustainability, as well as economical, ethical, business, legal and cultural issues surrounding environmental issues. The Health Care Perspective.

Through its environmental education programs, the Sierra Club nurtures caring, leadership skills, and critical thinking, and draws people of wide-ranging ethnic groups, cultures, and abilities into efforts to protect our environment. Using the inspiration of the Club's founding President, John Muir, we can achieve a better understanding of the multi-generational nature of the environmental movement. This is an important antidote to those who criticize environmental education as merely an "ecology fad." The Sierra Club offers a free John Muir Day Study Guide , which helps teachers teach about John Muir as an environmental role model. In addition, the Sierra Club has launched the John Muir Youth Award Program in order to help children to learn about wild places and take action to protect them.
