Kachemak Bay CoastWalk Celebrates 26 th Year
In 1984, Center for Alaska Coastal Studies (then the China Poot Bay Society) volunteers began to monitor the Kachemak Bay shoreline. Every year since, volunteers have gathered to participate in Kachemak Bay CoastWalk, a community science and stewardship program. September 2010 marked the 26th year that CACS has coordinated the annual effort. Volunteers choose a predetermined section of beach, and collect data on biodiversity and human impacts in their stretch of beach. Over 800 volunteers participated in the 26th anniversary CoastWalk, including participants in the very first CoastWalk, Toby Tyler and Mike McBride. During the 26 years of CoastWalk, volunteers have logged in 9100 volunteer hours monitoring the beach and have picked up over 12,000 lbs of marine debris (37,159 items)! The 25-year data set is a treasure trove of information on observing the shores of Kachemak Bay. Check out our

Categories: The end product of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway mitigation project, Crow's Neck Environment Education and Conference Center is one of the Southeast's premier environmental education and conference centers providing visitors "a natural place to learn." Situated on a peninsula jutting into the north end of beautiful 6600-acre Bay Springs Lake, the Center is the heart of a 530-acre resource characterized by rolling forested hills, nestled along the lake's rugged meandering shoreline. Since opening its doors in 1993 Crow's Neck has been a leader in experiential learning and also serves as an ideal natural venue for professional and private gatherings. You will prepare and present a wide range of environmental education programs to youth grades K-12 (80%), and pitch in where needed. This may include trail maintenance, food service, developing new programs, light housekeeping of residential lodges, and serving as Center monitor (host/hostess) during social events (20%). EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Opportunity to develop special projects including program development, enhancing the development of our Butterfly Garden, continuing the growth of our web site and possibly strengthening the Co-Op Course considered our "signature activity."

47. Fear Of Facts
Looks at the recent assault on environmental education by corporations and anti-environmental groups.
http://info-pollution.com/educate.htm
Fear of Facts The same groups that have been trying to deny the seriousness of environmental problems have now begun to attack environmental education. The attack has included newspaper editorials, a report from the Independent Commission on Environmental Education (a project of the George C. Marshall Institute), and the book Facts not Fear: A Parents Guide to Teaching Children About the Environment , by Michael Sanera and Jane S. Shaw ( Now in a second edition ). Several environmental groups have prepared resources to counter the attack. CLEAR examined some of the errors in Facts not Fear and also looked at the Sanera and Shaw's ties to several anti-environmental groups. NEW They ban textbooks, don't they by Frederick Clarkson. A report on how an environmental textbook was banned by the state of Texas, and the resulting lawsuit by the author. In "A Textbook Case of Censorship" ( Audubon , December 2002, page 16) Nancy Olmstead describes how several conservative groups have gotten several textbooks rejected by the Texas Board of Education by claiming that they were "unpatriotic" and "biased." In other cases coverage of environmental issues were censored or watered down. In one case a book had the following inserted: "In the past, the earth has been much warmer than it is now, and fossils of sea creatures show us that the sea level was much higher than it is today. So does it really matter if the world gets warmer?" In FRASER INSTITUTE BOOK GROWS A LONG NOSE IN 'TEACHING' KIDS ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT Tom Sandborn takes a critical look at a Canadian version of

Welcome.... Photo by Ashley Gramlich 2008 River Ridge is located on the shores of Watts Bar Lake and offers 1-5 day environmental education programs for people of all ages while primarily focusing on grades 4 – 8. While offering an experiential approach to education, our age appropriate curriculum is designed to enhance and complement classroom studies. In our outdoor classroom, terms like “dragon-fly larvae”, “interrelationships”, and “adaptations” take on immediate significance as participants experience them first hand. Even though we focus on an educational encounter with nature, the benefits of our program extend beyond environmental education. Through community living, participants learn to work together throughout the experience whether in classes, in cabins, or at meals.
