Editorial Review of Peace Museum
NOTE: The Peace Museum closed in April 2007 with plans to relocate. It is currently displaying its exhibitions at various other venues. Check the website for details. In 1981 Mark Rogovin and Marjorie Craig Benton took time off from painting murals and fighting for UNICEF, not to relax but to launch the Peace Museum, the country's first and only non-profit organization dedicated to exploring war and peace through the arts. Located under a regal dome in Garfield Park, the museum hosts a collection of more than 10,000 artifacts: drawings, paintings, ribbon banners, buttons, sculptures and photographs that highlight issues of domestic violence, human rights, women in power and life in prison. Artist Michael Alfonso's "Peace 2005 and Beyond," an installation of paper cranes, is part of the museum's permanent collection. The work is an example of "participatory art" and museum visitors have the option to purchase a crane ($10, available online) to add to the display.

Menorca Tourism Guide - Prehistoric Menorca Culture
Talayotic settlements are everywhere in Menorca, particularly in the south east corner of this Balearic Island. There's something special about Menorca as Mediterranean islands go. It's position for one, for it sits in a particularly strategic spot right in the heart of the Mediterranean. It's only small, with a surface area of 702 square kilometres and a coastline stretching 216 kilometres. Today the population is only about 81,000 inhabitants across it's eight municipalities of Mao, Ciutadella, Alaior, Ferreries, Es Mercadal, Es Castell, Sant Lluis and Es Migjorn Gran. Why so many Talayot settlements, and so many of them extremely intact? What does Talayot mean? Talayot is a pre-historic period, and one in which much activity was afoot it appears in Menorca! Human settlement in Menorca has been verified right back to the Bronze Age (2000 BC) and this period is the pre-Talayotic period which left various burial monuments such as megalithic tombs and collective tombs called navetas. The best known of these is the Naveta de Tudons. Towards 1400 B.C. this period evolved into the Talayotic period dated between 2000 and 1000 BC, significant for it's production of various large stone constructions known as talayots. Talayots is derived from the arabic word atalaya which means watchtower. It is this prehistoric period, and the many Talayotic contructions produced as a result that attracts so many visitors to Menorca.

Homer, Alaska: the town at the end of the road
BY CAROL PUCCI The Seattle Times HOMER, Alaska - Here, in what locals call the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World, the motel rooms have freezers and rental-car agencies charge extra for returning a vehicle with a "fish smell." The best time for a beer at the Salty Dawg Saloon on the Homer Spit is 4-7 p.m. "That's when the people come in and start talking about the big, fat fish they caught," says Asia Freeman, 36, a Homer native and owner of the Old Town Bed & Breakfast. Homer, a town of about 4,000 on Alaska's lower Kenai Peninsula, lies literally at the end of the U.S. highway system where the Sterling Highway (U.S. 1) stops at Kachemak Bay. The halibut catch draws thousands of tourists each year. Seafood processing, fishing boats and charter operations support the economy, so much so that an outsider might wonder if there's anything else to do here besides fish. It's the one that hikers and kayakers share with sea birds and black bears, and artists capture as the glacier-filled Kenai mountains color the morning summer skies an icy blue.

www S ettled below the strikingly beautiful mountains of the Japanese Alps lies Azumino a picturesque valley in the heart of the countryside of Honshu, the central island of Japan. The area, introduced as Hotaka in the 'Lonely Planet Japan' guidebook, is located in the western part of Nagano, the prefecture that was brought to international attention during the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. With stunning views of the surrounding alpine landscape and a dizzying array of cultural attractions, Azumino really is one of Japan's best-kept secrets! Azumino attracts many visitors throughout the year through its close proximity to the neighbouring city of Matsumoto and its close association with the sweeping mountains that overlook the area. Indeed, Azumino is seen by many as the 'gateway' to the Japanese Alps, and hikers and snowsports enthusiasts flock to these mountains annually to sample their world-class trails and slopes. While the Northern Alps are certainly the most dominant feature in the area, Azumino is equally famous the vast wealth of cultural attractions that can be found throughout its valley. The

Penang is famous for it's food and Penangites love to eat. There are two places to enjoy the fare on offer, either at open-air hawker stalls or at what translates into a coffee shop. Both are dotted all over the island and it is probably best to ask the locals for their opinion on which one to frequent - we guarantee that everybody will have a favourite. Malay, Chinese and Indian are all available, but the must try is the Penang speciality the Laksa. Simply noodles in a spicy sour soup garnished with mint leaves, cucumber, lettuce, pineapple and onion, variations on this are now popping up in restaurants all over the world. For fresh fruits, visit the many orchards at Balik Pulau and Air Itam. Or go to the heart of town for the much-loved fragrant local biscuits. A commodity popular amongst the Singaporeans, the Tau Sar Peah or Dragon Ball biscuits are filled with green beans, Beh Tay Soh with molasses, and Heong Peah stuffed with rich brown sugar. These favourites are indeed tasty and memorable. Sunrise @ Gurney Drive If you wake up early enough, try to catch the sunrise along Gurney Drive's horizon. Watch he sun rose, silhouetting the fishermen pushing their boats out to the sea. Further away and in direct economic contrast was the site of the massive ships docked at the Butterworth port on the mainland.
