Introduction
Few experiences match the drama of a convulsive seizure. A person having a severe seizure may cry out, fall to the floor unconscious, twitch or move uncontrollably, drool, or even lose bladder control. Within minutes, the attack is over, and the person regains consciousness but is exhausted and dazed. This is the image most people have when they hear the word epilepsy. However, this type of seizure a generalized tonic-clonic seizure is only one kind of epilepsy. There are many other kinds, each with a different set of symptoms.

Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a brain disorder involving repeated, spontaneous seizures of any type. Seizures ("fits," convulsions) are episodes of disturbed brain function that cause changes in attention or behavior. They are caused by abnormally excited electrical signals in the brain. See also: Seizures
Causes
Seizures ("fits," convulsions) are episodes of disturbed brain function that cause changes in attention or behavior. They are caused by abnormally excited electrical signals in the brain. Sometimes a seizure is related to a temporary condition, such as exposure to drugs, withdrawal from certain drugs, a high fever, or abnormal levels of sodium or glucose in the blood. If the seizure or seizures do not happen again once the underlying problem is corrected, the person does NOT have epilepsy. In other cases, permanent injury to or changes in brain tissue cause the brain to be abnormally excitable. In these cases, the seizures happen without an immediate cause. This is epilepsy. Epilepsy can affect people of any age. Epilepsy may be idiopathic, which means the cause cannot be identified. These seizures usually begin between ages 5 and 20, but they can happen at any age. People with this condition have no other neurological problems, but sometimes have a family history of seizures or epilepsy.

Seizures
Main Diseases and Conditions
Seizures and Epilepsy
Seizures or convulsions are fairly common, occurring in about 3-5% of children. Epilepsy, having two or more seizures of unknown cause, is less common and only occurs in about 1% of children. It begins in childhood in about 70% of cases. Seizures in children can range from febrile seizures and occasional non-febrile seizures to infantile spasms that can occur daily and are difficult to treat. Seizures, especially the first seizure that a child has, can be very frightening for both children and their parents. You should call your Pediatrician and seek medical attention if you suspect that your child has had a seizure. The first part of the medical evaluation of a child who has had a seizure, assuming that the seizure has stopped and the child is otherwise well, is to determine if the event that the child has was actually a seizure. If observed, provide your Pediatrician with as much information as you can about what happened before, during and after the presumed seizure. Epilepsy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Epilepsy is a chronic condition of the brain . It is characterised by seizures that do not seem to have an obvious cause. The condition is very common ; about 50 million people have epilepsy worldwide. People with epilepsy are sometimes called epileptic , but it is the fit or seizure that is "epileptic". Many people have died from seizures. There are many different forms of seizures, and there are also many different forms of epilepsy. Most forms of epilepsy cannot be cured. In most cases, drugs can make life easier for those suffering from it. In very few cases, (which are difficult treat), surgery may help. In some cases, only eating special things (called a diet ) may help as well. The diet used is called Ketogenic diet . It was mainly used to treat certain children with epilepsy, before good drugs became available. Today, it is used to treat certain cases where drugs do not seem to help. Certain forms of the disease can disappear after a time, they do e.g. only occur in childhood. Epilepsy is not one condition. Rather, it stands for a number of health problems that all show in the same ways.

Introduction
It happened without warning. One moment my young male Belgian Tervueren was snuggling against me as I sat on the couch; the next moment he lost control of his hindquarters and fell onto his side, unconscious. His lips writhed back over his teeth; his legs stretched out, then became rigid; and his head twisted up and back as if an unseen hand was trying to raise his chin to an impossible height. It seemed like an eternity, but actually only two minutes passed before his body relaxed and consciousness slowly ebbed back. For an hour afterward he seemed exhausted and disoriented. I was shaken too, never having witnessed such a seizure before. Yet later that day the dog was romping about as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. My dog is lucky. His seizures have been few and far between. We now believe they are caused by hypothyroidism. Other dogs are not so lucky. Seizures can be severe and frequent. They may occur in "clusters" (several in one day), or progress to the life-threatening state of status epilepticus. In extreme cases where seizures cannot be controlled, a veterinarian may advise euthanasia. Epilepsy is found in all breeds and mixed breeds of dogs. Belgian Tervueren are listed among the breeds for which a genetic factor is either proved or highly suspected. Other breeds so listed include the
