Här följer några exempel på sjukdomstillstånd som ibland (men inte alltid) kan orsaka epilepsi: Infektioner i hjärnan med efterföljande ärrbildning Allvarliga syrebristtillstånd i hjärnan Olika former av missbruk (hos vuxna är alkoholmissbruk en vanlig orsak till epilepsi) Akuta förgiftningar av kemikalier eller läkemedel Hjärntumörer Hjärnblödningar Benbrott i skallens ben Medfödda ämnesomsättningar (t ex fenylketonuri, PKU) Ärftlig läggning för epilepsi Man delar in anfallen i olika grupper: Grand mal Anfallens utseende kan variera mycket. Vid grand mal ("stora anfall") blir personen plötsligt medvetslös, faller omkull och får kramper (muskelryckningar). Anfallet varar sällan mer än tio minuter, men följs ofta av behov att sova. Petit mal Petit mal anfall ("det lilla anfallet") förekommer mest hos barn. Personen blir frånvarande, men faller inte omkull. Anfallet är kort, oftast bara några sekunder.

The activity is characterized by sudden powerful muscular contractions and unconsciousness. Seizures are induced by electrical activity in the brain that is considered abnormal. Seizures may be sparked by various health complications, including stroke or low blood sugar. Typically however, the condition known as epilepsy induces seizures. Healthy people could experience seizure, and usually, it won’t be followed by another round ever again. For some people though, medications are necessary to stop seizures from erupting. The condition happens when electrical activity on the entire brain surface becomes unusually synchronized. Generally, seizures arise from abnormal electrical rhythms from the brain’s neurons. In a normally functioning brain, the nerve cells convey chemical and electrical signals to one another through synapses that serve as roads between them. When seizures happen however, the brain’s normal electrical signals are modified. Up to now, the causes of half of all seizure cases are still unexplained. However, a variety of preexisting health complications can at times cause seizures. Some of these health conditions include traumatic injuries in the head, tumors in the brain, strokes, meningitis, abnormally formed brain blood vessels, genetic illnesses, encephalitis, use of illegal drugs and alcoholic beverages, and low levels of substances like calcium and glucose.

LINKS INLEIDING Hoewel ongeveer 1 op de 150 mensen epilepsie heeft, is er toch bij de meeste mensen weinig over deze aandoening bekend. Behalve een grote aanval, heeft men veelal nog nooit andere uitingen van epilepsie gezien. Epilepsie kan zich namelijk op heel verschillende manieren openbaren. De zogenoemde absence bijvoorbeeld, is een aanvalsvorm die aan de omgeving geheel onopgemerkt voorbij kan gaan. Het kenmerkende verschijnsel van epilepsie is het plotselinge karakter van de aanval. Sommige aanvallen kunnen er vreemd en soms angstaanjagend uitzien. Omstanders reageren vaak met schrik of paniek; soms lopen mensen zelfs weg als ze zien dat iemand een aanval heeft. Een dergelijke reactie is, hoewel begrijpelijk, niet nodig en bovendien erg vervelend voor degene die een aanval heeft, omdat de kans bestaat dat hij of zij zich tijdens een aanval verwondt. Bij sommige aanvallen is de hulp van anderen zeker nodig. In zo'n geval is het goed als ouders, familie, vrienden of omstanders hulp kunnen bieden, en weten wat ze moeten doen.
