Don Miguel Ruiz, Janet Mills
April 2004
Paperback
Book Review
As little children we know how to live in the moment and be completely authentic. But then something damaging happens to us, according to author Don Miguel Ruiz: we are given "knowledge" about how to live in the world. Parents tell us how to behave in order to be a "good" boy or girl. Teachers tell us what it takes to be a "winner" or a "successful" adult. This collective "voice of knowledge" is not only falseit is often poisonous, explains Ruiz, bestselling author of The Four Agreements. It makes us believe that "I am not the way I should be; it is not okay to be me." Drawing upon the story of Adam and Eve, Ruiz refers to the forbidden tree of knowledge and likens the abandonment of the true self to the fall from heaven. What Ruiz calls "the voice of knowledge" others spiritual teachers might call egothe hidden and... Mapping the Mind

Paperback
Book Review In the last decades of the 20th century, scientists have come to believe that the human brain is almost completely modular. Every bit of the brain does something in particular, and surprisingly specific abilities, memories, and responses are in localized areas. Journalist Rita Carter has drawn a map of what is known (and speculated) about the mind in a heavily illustrated field guide to the human brain.

Philosophy
A philosophy is a system of beliefs about reality. It is one's integrated view of the world. It includes an understanding of the nature of existence, man, and his role in the world. Philosophy is the foundation of knowledge . It is the standard by which ideas are integrated and understood. Philosophy is a necessary product of man's rational mind. To live, man must gain knowledge of the world. To understand the world, man must form conclusions about its very nature. For instance, to gain knowledge of particular objects, man must recognize that objects have identity . He must recognize that conclusions are possible because the world does exist, and exists in a particular way. Philosophy provides the framework for which man can understand the world. It provides the premises by which man can discover truth, and use his mind to support his life . Every man has an understanding of the world. Every man must have a philosophy, even if it is never made explicit.

What is Epistemology? Philosophy of Truth, Knowledge, Belief
By Austin Cline , About.com Guide
    See More About:
zSB(3,3) What is Epistemology?: Epistemology is the investigation into the grounds and nature of knowledge itself. The study of epistemology focuses on our means for acquiring knowledge and how we can differentiate between truth and falsehood. Modern epistemology generally involves a debate between rationalism and empiricism, or the question of whether knowledge can be acquired a priori or a posteriori
Empiricism : knowledge is obtained through experience.
Rationalism : knowledge can be acquired through the use of reason. Why is Epistemology Important?: Why Does Epistemology Matter to Atheism?: Many debates between atheist and theists revolve around fundamental issues which people don't recognize or never get around to discussing. Many of these are esistemological in nature: in disagreeing about whether it's reasonable to believe in the existence of god, to believe in miracles, to accept revelation and scriptures as authoritative, and so forth, atheists and theists are ultimately disagreeing about basic epistemological principles. Without understanding this and understanding the various epistemological positions, people will just end up talking past each other.

Feminist Epistemology and Philosophy of Science
First published Wed Aug 9, 2000; substantive revision Thu Aug 12, 2010 The central concept of feminist epistemology is that of a situated knower, and hence of situated knowledge: knowledge that reflects the particular perspectives of the subject. Feminist philosophers are interested in how gender situates knowing subjects. They have articulated three main approaches to this question: feminist standpoint theory, feminist postmodernism, and feminist empiricism. Different conceptions of how gender situates knowers also inform feminist approaches to the central problems of the field: grounding feminist criticisms of science and feminist science, defining the proper roles of social and political values in inquiry, evaluating ideals of objectivity and rationality, and reforming structures of epistemic authority.
    1. Situated Knowers
Feminist epistemology conceives of knowers as situated in particular relations to what is known and to other knowers. What is known, and the way that it is known, thereby reflects the situation or perspective of the knower. Here we are concerned with

... e Epistemology (from Greek epistēmē , "knowledge, science" + logos ") or theory of knowledge is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge It addresses the questions:
    • What is knowledge? How is knowledge acquired? How do we know what we know?
Much of the debate in this field has focused on analyzing the nature of knowledge and how it relates to connected notions such as truth belief , and justification . It also deals with the means of production of knowledge, as well as skepticism about different knowledge claims. The term was introduced into English by the Scottish philosopher James Frederick Ferrier Academic disciplines vary widely in their implicit epistemologies. This article is written in a philosophical style and tacitly assumes a typically philosophical epistemology. Different accounts of "epistemology" would emerge if written by representatives of other humanities disciplines such as history or literature studies, or non-humanities disciplines such as natural sciences, social sciences, formal sciences, law or theology.

    Epistemology
First published Wed Dec 14, 2005 Defined narrowly, epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief. As the study of knowledge, epistemology is concerned with the following questions: What are the necessary and sufficient conditions of knowledge? What are its sources? What is its structure, and what are its limits? As the study of justified belief, epistemology aims to answer questions such as: How we are to understand the concept of justification? What makes justified beliefs justified? Is justification internal or external to one's own mind? Understood more broadly, epistemology is about issues having to do with the creation and dissemination of knowledge in particular areas of inquiry. This article will provide a systematic overview of the problems that the questions above raise and focus in some depth on issues relating to the structure and the limits of knowledge and justification.

What exactly is knowledge? How can we say that we know anything? What is the difference, if any, between knowledge and belief? How can we justify our beliefs? These issues have been explored by many philosophers over the centuries, and many different answers have been suggested. A common definition of knowledge is that it is "justified true belief." This, of course, raises the further questions of how we can know that a belief is true, and what it means to be able to justify a belief. Can we justify a belief even if it is not true, or can only true beliefs be justified? Many of these questions were first raised by the Greek philosopher Plato over two thousand years ago, and have been continually explored ever since.

William James January 11 New York August 26 Chocorua , New Hampshire philosopher and elder brother of the writer Henry James , was born in New York, son of a Swedenborgian theologian , Henry James, Sr. He received an eclectic and trans-Atlantic education as his eccentric father's son. Together with Charles Sanders Peirce , who coined the term, James founded the philosophical school or (perhaps more accurately) orientation of pragmatism James received his degree in medicine at Harvard, and taught anatomy there from 1872, philosophy after 1882. He first made a mark with Principles of Psychology (1890), which criticized both the English associationist school and the Hegelianism of his day as competing dogmatisms, of little explanatory value, and which sought to re-conceive of the human mind as inherently purposive and selective.
    1 Epistemology
James defined truth as that which works in the way of belief. "True ideas lead us into useful verbal and conceptual quarters as well as directly up to useful sensible termini. They lead to consistency, stability and flowing human intercourse" but "all true processes must lead to the face of directly verifying sensible experiences somewhere," he wrote.
