    Area: 125,000 sq. km. (48,000 sq. mi.); about the size of Pennsylvania.
    Cities: Capital Asmara (est. pop. 435,000). Other cities Keren (57,000); Assab (28,000); Massawa (25,000); Afabet (25,000); Tessenie (25,000); Mendefera (25,000); Dekemhare (20,000); Adekeieh (15,000); Barentu (15,000); Ghinda (15,000).
    Terrain: Central highlands straddle escarpment associated with Rift Valley, dry coastal plains, and western lowlands.
    Climate: Temperate in the highlands; hot in the lowlands.
    Eritrea Geography
    Eritrea is located in the Horn of Africa and is bordered on the northeast and east by the Red Sea, on the west and northwest by Sudan, on the south by Ethiopia, and on the southeast by Djibouti. The country has a high central plateau that varies from 1,800 to 3,000 meters (6,000-10,000 ft.) above sea level. A coastal plain, western lowlands, and some 300 islands comprise the remainder of Eritrea's land mass. Eritrea has no year-round rivers. The climate is temperate in the mountains and hot in the lowlands. Asmara, the capital, is about 2,300 meters (7,500 ft.) above sea level. Maximum temperature is 26o C (80o F). The weather is usually sunny and dry, with the short or belg rains occurring February-April and the big or meher rains beginning in late June and ending in mid-September.

    Eritrea Natural Vegetation
    Eritrea Natural Vegetation reflects the rich biological diversity of the nation. This East European country not only takes necessary steps for its preservation, but also uses it in a beneficial way. Eritrea has different types of natural ecosystems that are spread all over the country. Its extensive grassland systems includes Aristida grasslands, which is in the west, on the other hand, Sorghum purpueo-sericeum grassland is in the southwest and is separated by riverine forest and large tracts of woodland Acacia.
    Again, on the northern hilly region one can come across steppe patched with semi-desert and riverine woodland. Eritrea Natural Vegetation on the south-central territory is the homeland of several forest systems. There are Juniperus forests, Acacia woodland and mixed evergreen tropical forests spread across the country. The latter is found in the northern part of Asmara. In reality, the long coastline of Eritrea is a perfect combination of halophytic vegetation and semi-desert, which comprises small patches of mangrove forests. There is no doubt in the fact that Eritrea with its wide variety of wildlife species will definitely enthrall the people. Currently those varied ecosystem is heavily under pressure and certain protective measures are been taken to safeguard them.

    Eritrea Land and Water
    Eritrea covers an area of 125,000 square kilometers including the islands along the Red Sea and the Dahlak Archipelago. In Eritrea, water is scarce and the land is prone to prevalent soil erosion. Although Eritrea is located on a hilly region surrounded by mountains. The valley on the central plateau is rich in fertility and best suited for agriculture.
    Eritrea Climate
    Eritrea receives an annual rainfall of 508 mm and enjoys pleasant climatic conditions throughout the year. In the highlands, the hottest month is May, while winter has almost freezing nights. The temperature varies at sea level between December and February.
    Three Main Regions of Eritrea
    The first region, lying along the red sea coast forms the narrow eastern lowlands. Ethiopian plateau extends towards the north to form the second geographical region, while the third comprise of the western plains occupying the western border of Eritrea with Sudan.

    Christmas in Eritrea is one of the festivals of the country which is celebrated with great pomp and joy. Christmas in Eritrea is celebrated on two days. The youngsters celebrate 25th December as Christmas. Christmas in Eritrea involves partying, exchange of gifts, cards as well as celebration with family and friends. However, the traditional celebration takes place on 7th January. Prior to Christmas, people go for shopping for clothes, gifts and a whole lot of decorations to bring sparkle and light to their homes. Besides this, they also purchase a sheep or a goat, which is slaughtered as a mark of sacrifice.
