History Part I The Land and Its People Her geography is unique. Covering well over a million square kilometers, Ethiopia is about twice as large as Kenya or Texas, or about five times as large as the United Kingdom. Its magnificent landscape ranges from desert areas to forested highlands. At 4,620 meters, Mount Ras Deshen is Ethiopia's highest peak, and Africa's fourth highest, but twenty mountains rise to more than 4,000 meters. The waters of the Abay River, or Blue Nile, feed Lake Tana and flow into the Nile. Most of the Nile's waters originate in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is generally considered Africa's oldest continuously identifiable nation, though Egypt's written history is older and more complete. Ethiopia is landlocked today. Eritrea (independent since 1993), Djibouti and parts of Somalia, share much of their ancient, medieval and modern histories with Abyssinia, as Ethiopia was formerly known. Yemen is nearby. Across the Red Sea is the mountainous Asir Province of Saudi Arabia. Asir, which lies in Asia, has a rugged topography not unlike that of Ethiopia's uplands, and Ethiopians are one of the province's larger ethnic minorities. In times past, Ethiopia bordered Egypt, encompassing parts of what is now Sudan.

Geography
Ethiopia is the world's 27th largest country, with the major portion of land lying on the Horn of Africa, the eastern-most part of the African landmass. Bordering Ethiopia is Sudan to the west, Somalia to the East, Kenya to the south and Djibouti and Eritrea to the north. Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, resulting in Ethiopia becoming landlocked. Ethiopia is divided by nine ethnically-based administrative states, which are subdivided into sixty-eight zones and two chartered cities, Addis Ababa [1] and Dire Dawa [5]. The nine states are as follows:
Ethiopia's Regions Ethiopia contains a great diversity of terrains with mountain ranges contrasting against lowlands such as the Great Rift Valley (which runs south-west to north-east) and the Danakil depression. This diversity determines wide variations in climate, soils, natural vegetation and settlements. The rainy season is from mid-June to mid-September, preceded by intermittent showers from February or March. Deforestation is a major concern in Ethiopia as it results in soil erosion, loss of nutrients in the soil, loss of animal habitats and reduction in biodiversity. It is estimated the country loses 1,410km2 of natural forests per year. Ethiopia's government plans to combat this through education, promoting reforestation programs and by providing alternative raw material to timber.

Government system Geography and Nature Ethiopia is strategically located in the Horn of Africa, 3' and 14.8" latitude 33' and 48' longitude bordering Somalia, the Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya and Eritrea with a total border length of 5,311 km. It is the 10th largest country in Africa. The 3rd populous country in Africa L owest pt is 100 mts. below sea level The highest pt is 4620 mts above sea level .. Ras Dashen Its proximity to the Middle East and Europe, together with its easy access to the major ports of the region, enhances its international trade. C limate Although Ethiopia lies within 15 degrees North of the Equator, owing to the moderating influence of high altitude, the country enjoys moderate temperature and pleasant climate, with average temperature rarely exceeding 20oc (68oF). The sparsely populated lowlands typically have sub–tropical and tropical climates. At approximately 850mm (34inches), the average annual rainfall for the whole country is considered to be moderate by global standards. In most of the high lands, rainfall occurs in two distinct seasons: the “small rains” during February and March and the “big rains” from June to September. Nature The natural beauty of Ethiopia amazes the first- time visitor. Ethiopia is a land of rugged mountains (some 25 are over 4,000 meters high), broad savannah, lakes and rivers. The unique Rift Valley is a remarkable region of volcanic lakes, with their famous collections of bird life, great escarpments and stunning vistas. Tissisat, the Blue Nile Falls, must rank as one of the greatest natural spectacles in Africa to day. With 14 major wildlife reserves, Ethiopia provides a microcosm of the entire sub Saharan ecosystem, Bird life abounds, and indigenous animals from the rare Walia ibex to the shy wild ass, roam free just as nature intended. Ethiopia, after the rains, is a land decked with flowers and with many more native plants than most countries in Africa.
