      Intervet to support European Zoos
      21 November 2005
Boxmeer, 21 November 2005 - In October the European Commission published a decision permitting the vaccination of zoo birds against bird flu, under certain conditions. The Dutch Government received EU approval on 14 November 2005 for a vaccination program in Dutch zoos. Intervet has pledged support to the European zoos by offering to supply bird flu vaccine free of charge. Considering the important role zoos have to play in conservation and education the decision of the European Commission to allow vaccination is welcomed; paving the way for zoos to start actively protecting their often valuable and rare bird collections against avian influenza. In the recent past Intervet has been approached by a number of zoos requesting further information on the merits of vaccination. By providing a suitable vaccine (Nobilis Influenza H5N2) free of charge Intervet is in a position to support all registered European zoos, with EU approval to vaccinate against bird flu. Intervet’s H7 vaccine was previously used in a vaccination program for Dutch zoos in 2003. Intervet’s vaccine against the present bird flu virus has been used extensively and very successfully for a number of years in Hong Kong as part of an official government avian influenza control program. The Hong Kong experience and additional information gathered from transmission studies show that vaccination can block virus circulation. However vaccination will only contribute to bird flu eradication if supported by an overall control program. Intervet’s bird flu vaccine is being used in a number of countries affected by the current H5 outbreak. Intervet routinely produces avian influenza vaccines, which protect against the H5, H7 and H9 bird flu strains (Intervet vaccine strains: H5N2, H5N6, H7N1, H7N7 and H9N2).

€1 Million Boost to Eastern European Zoos
The Bulgarian municipality of Dobrich and the Romanian municipal city of Constanta have received a grant of over EUR 1 M to boost their tourist infrastructure and revamp their zoos. The funds are provided by the Romania-Bulgaria Cross Border Cooperation Program and are aimed at increasing the popularity of zoos in the Bulgarian municipality of Dobrich and the Romanian city of Constanta. The two municipal cities will work on a project for increasing the development potential of the cross-border region by improving its tourist infrastructure. In 18 months the tourist services in the two cities will be given a substantial boost. The Center for the Protection of Nature and Animals in Dobrich will be equipped with a new shelter for brown bears as well as a veterinary clinic and a warehouse. Cages for birds and small rodents and a small lake will also be provided. An information center will also be set up in the Dobrich zoo and a special tourist bus line will transport visitors to both Dobrich and Constanta. The infrastructure of the Constanta Museum Complex for Science and Nature will also be improved, new shelters for ponies, deer, pelicans, swans, cormorants will be constructed.

A study in the U.S.-based journal Science suggests female elephants living in in Africa and Asia live longer than those in European zoos. Researchers, led by Georgia Mason of the University of Guelph in Ontario, said a study of data on more than 4,500 Asian and African elephants from Amboseli National Park in Kenya, the Myanma Timber Enterprise in Burma and European zoos shows being born into a zoo, being moved between zoos and the possible loss of their mothers puts animals at particular risk. The study said the median lifespan for African elephants born in zoos was 16.9 years while the median for Africans at the Kenyan preserve that died of natural causes was 56 years. The report was criticized by the North American-based Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The statement will be ready in early 2003. It will bring to light to what extent this report on behalf of the RSPCA tells the whole story or whether important details are given in a reprehensible manor. We have massive doubts about the acumen of the authors of the study. The two Oxford scientists are reviewing the husbandry of elephants in European zoos.
This means no less than 104 zoos (not included in this figure are Safari Parks). The authors only visited 3 (!) zoos in England:

EZE (European Zoo Educators) Conference From 28th. February till the 1st of March 2009, the 20th EZE Conference took place in Cologne, Germany. Nearly 150 Participants were a part of the largest Conference so far. In addition to providing a forum for many interesting presentations about programs and projects, the aim of the conference was to work together on a new EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) Conservation Education Strategy, following the approval of the 2008 new EAZA Education Standards. As Dr Lesley Dickie, Executive Director of EAZA, said: After many hours of work from a lot of people, the final draft is almost complete and hopefully the Strategy will be ready for approval this year.

Live hard, die young - how elephants suffer in zoos
November 2002 On 23rd October the RSPCA published the fullest ever study into the welfare of elephants in zoos. The study, conducted by scientists at Oxford University shows elephants die young in European zoos, having suffered from deficient enclosures, poor diet, illness, inappropriate social grouping, and rough treatment at the hands of their keepers. Do elephants really belong in places like this... Adult elephants in European zoos have about half the 30-year lifespan of their counterparts working in Asian timber camps, when they could expect to reach 60-65 in the wild. Zoo breeding programmes also have an abysmal record - 35% of zoo females fail to breed, 15-25% of Asian zoo babies are stillborn, and another 6-18% are rejected or even killed by their mothers. Zoo enclosures can be 60 to 100 times smaller than the smallest wild territories - with 90% of those in Europe providing no grazing. For several years CAPS has investigated the keeping of elephants in zoos, and our major undercover investigation of elephant training at Blackpool Zoo was widely covered in the RSPCA report. We have for a long time criticised the training of elephants in zoos to perform circus-style tricks, and these tricks have also been condemned in this report.

The sad cages of menageries past have been replaced, by and large, with zoos that provide evocative and realistic habitats for countless creatures, in addition to offering visitors the appeal of getting up close and personal with animals of all shapes and sizes. As of 2007, there are 16,306 endangered species globally, according to The World Conservation Union’s Red List of Threatened Species. In fact, many threatened species no longer exist in the wild—you’ve got to visit a zoo or two if you want to see some of the world’s rarest fauna. Even the most commercial zoological parks have an eco-friendly aura these days. Says John Lehnhart, Animal Operations Director at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, “the backstory of the park is conservation and connecting people with nature.” The star attractions at the park are its some 1,500 exotic animals (and that, Lehnart points out, isn’t counting the birds and the fishes), as well as Kilimanjaro Safaris, a 110-acre re-creation of the African savannah.
