19-day wildlife adventure with Oceanwide Expeditions

We were on board Plancius, the newest ship in the Oceanwide Expeditions fleet, on a 19- day journey to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. The first challenge I faced was getting to Ushuia, Argentina, the end-of-the-world southernmost city in the world. You reach there by flying through Buenos Aires and changing airports there from the international airport to the domestic airport. You'll want to arrive a day or two early to ensure you don't miss your ship due to travel delays. After traveling 24 hours from Tampa to Ushuaia I checked into the Hotel Los Cauquenes, a spa and resort on the outskirts of the city. The hotel was exquisite and the view from the picture window in my room was spectacular. The restaurant is casual yet gourmet. There is a complimentary shuttle bus to the city or you can take a taxi for about $6. One of the main attractions in Ushuaia is the Maritime Museum which is housed in an old prison. There are exhibits about the prison, maritime history, and there are a couple of fine arts exhibits as well. There are also a large number of shops and restaurants in town as well as two casinos. I boarded the Plancius at 4:00 pm for a 6:00 pm departure. We had a safety drill and then a dinner of seafood pasta. The following day was a day at sea on our way to our first destination

    Falkland Islands Development Corporation
The Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC) is responsible for encouraging the economic development of the Islands. The organisation works at national, business sector and individual levels. At the national level, FIDC tackles important infrastructure issues. Externally, these include air access and connection to the worldwide containerised shipping network. Within the Islands, the organisation has been involved in establishing an East-West ferry link, constructing an EU-standard abattoir and setting up a meat export industry FIDC works closely with different economic sectors to further their interests. These activities have included employing an aquaculture specialist to explore the potential for fish farming in the Islands, appointing consultants to investigate the possibilities for expanded tourism facilities, and working with others in the Islands to add value to wool. FIDC also supports a range of promotional and marketing initiatives such as the creation of the Falklands Wool Mark and Mark of Origin. Finally, FIDC is a key resource for individual companies, offering business development advice and providing loans and targeted grants. The organisation can be involved in activities as diverse as advising a single individual who wants to start a new business in their spare room, to the establishment of a whole new industry, as in the case of meat exports.

The Samuel Johnson Sound Bite Page Johnson's Political commentary Thoughts on the Late Transactions Respecting Falkland's Islands by Samuel Johnson
T o proportion the eagerness of contest to its importance seems too hard a task for human wisdom. The pride of wit has kept ages busy in the discussion of useless questions, and the pride of power has destroyed armies, to gain or to keep unprofitable possessions. Not many years have passed, since the cruelties of war were filling the world with terrour and with sorrow; rage was at last appeased, or strength exhausted, and, to the harassed nations peace was restored with its pleasures and its benefits. Of this state all felt the happiness, and all implored the continuance; but what continuance of happiness can be expected, when the whole system of European empire can be in danger of a new concussion, by a contention for a few spots of earth, which, in the deserts of the ocean, had almost escaped human notice, and which, if they had not happened to make a seamark, had, perhaps, never had a name! But the writer, to whom this employment shall be assigned, will have few opportunities of descriptive splendour, or narrative elegance. Of other countries it is told, how often they have changed their government; these islands have, hitherto, changed only their name. Of heroes to conquer, or legislators to civilize, here has been no appearance; nothing has happened to them, but that they have been, sometimes, seen by wandering navigators, who passed by them in search of better habitations.

    Falkland Islands
Gallery The Falkland Islands are situated in the South Atlantic, approximately 400 kilometers east of the nearest point on the coast of Argentina, and are connected with Patagonia by an elevated submarine plateau. Details The Falkland Islands are about 200 in number, but only two, East Falkland and West Falkland are of considerable size. The largest is East Falkland, which is about 150 kilometers in length with an average width of 64 kilometers and a square area of 7770 square kilometers. West Falkland is 128 kilometers long, about 40 Kilometers wide and about 5180 square kilometers in area. A narrow strait between 28 and 4 kilometers running north to (magnetic) south separates East and West Falkland. The coasts of both islands are deeply indented with many bays and inlets that provide protected harbors. East Falkland is near bisected by two deep fiords which leave the north and south of the connected by an isthmus just under 2.5 kilometers. The north part of the island is hilly with an east-west range rising as high as just over 600 meters in places called the Wickham Heights. The rest of the island is grassland and bog fed many countless small streams. West Falkland is hillier, with a mountain range called the Hornsby Hills running parallel with the Falkland Sound. The highest peak is Mount Maria, rising to just over 690 meters.

    Description of the flag
The pre-1999 blue ensign by >Graham Bartram and António Martins The flag actually changed in appearance this year (1999) when the Ministry of Defence changed the specification for the placement of badges on ensigns. The size of the badge was increased considerably (200% - 300%) and all white discs were removed. The badges are now more like major charges on the field rather than small augmentations. In the future, if one of these flags needs to be differenced (e.g. the Falkland's Police ensign - which doesn't actually exist) the second badge will sit in the centre of the third quarter.
Graham Bartram , 12 October and 11 December 1999 The The Merchant Shipping (Falkland Islands Colours) Order 1998 was made on 16th December 1998, laid before Parliament on 4th January 1999 and coming into force on the 25th of January this year.
