Family Farm
A family farm is a farm owned and operated by a family , and passed down from generation to generation. It is the basic unit of the mostly agricultural economy of much of human history and continues to be so in developing nations. Alternatives to family farms include those run by agribusiness, colloquially known as factory farms , or by collective farming.
United States legal definition
As defined by USDA regulations related to farm loan programs (e.g. those administered by the Farm Service Agency), a family farm is a farm that
  • produces agricultural commodities for sale in such quantities so as to be recognized in the community as a farm and not a rural residence; produces enough income (including off-farm employment) to pay family and farm operating expenses, pay debts, and maintain the property

If You Eat, You Are Involved In Farming
    Did You Know

    • The number of farmers under the age of 25 has decreased 50% in the last 10 years!!
    • 20% of American jobs have ties to Agriculture!! This is an editorial by me, Sarah Brombaugh, of Same Dog Productions, part owner of a Family Farm Corporation, and wife of an American Farmer. I did not grow up on a farm. I was raised in a big city, where I thought farmers had it made. All the food they could eat for free!! Throw some seed in the ground and make money!! Wow, what an easy life. I have now lived on a Family Farm for 27 years and I know differently....
      M
any remember the years when farming was a way of life. When you grew all your own food...eggs, pork, beef, poultry, gardens full of bountiful vegetables.
T ractors didn't cost as much or more as a new home. You didn't have to plant thousands of acres to make a living.
T hose days are gone. Gone forever we're afraid. Along with those days, the Family Farm is disappearing.

Did You Know? Between 1974 and 2002, corporate-owned U.S. farms increased by more than 46 percent. vii
The dramatic expansion of industrial agriculture (or factory farming) has made it increasingly difficult for small family farmers in the U.S to stay in business. Instead, the food industry has become dominated by a handful of giant corporations which benefit from government policies that favor large-scale production. There are now nearly five million fewer farms in the U.S. than there were in the 1930's. Photo by Jason Houston Family farmers are being forced out of business at an alarming rate. According to Farm Aid, every week 330 farmers leave their land. i As a result, there are now nearly five million fewer farms in the U.S. than there were in the 1930's. ii Of the two million remaining farms, only 565,000 are family operations. iii As established family farms are shut down, they are not being replaced by new farms and young farmers. Very few young people become farmers today, and half of all U.S. farmers are between the ages of 45 and 65, while only 6% of all farmers are under the age of 35. If food were like car parts or other consumer products, it might. But because our

Welcome to our Certified Organic, Certified Humane Family Farm! We have spent many hours and much emotion on the development and implementation of our goals. We are not done yet, and our plans for expansion are well under way. Our Grass Fed Operation has proven time and again that quality, taste, and tenderness take a dedicated plan. Not only the processing aging, but the types of feed our animals consume are of vital importance. We inter seed our pastures and hay fields with additional varieties of grasses and legumes each year. We also learn from our neighbors and contacts of many new veggies that are wonderful forage. Research is the key, learning all we can will result in a superior product. We are committed to our sustainable farming program for some very important reasons. The health of our land, herds and the nutritional value of what we produce. Northwest Missouri has long been the perfect place in the United States to raise beef. The gently rolling hills, abundant water supply, lush meadows and beautiful timber make this a heaven on earth for our cattle. Come on in, browse our site, and if you don't see what you want, just give us a call or email and we will do our best.

There are almost two million farms in the USA. About 80% of those are small farms, and a large percentage are family owned. More and more of these farmers are now selling their products directly to the public. They do this via CSA programs Farmers' Markets Food Coops , u-picks, farm stands, and other direct marketing channels. Would you like to support your local farmer? Use our map to find a small farm near you! Large scale chemical agriculture is poisoning our soils and our water, and weakening our communities. By buying direct from a family farm you can help put a stop to this unfortunate trend.
