Identification. Location and Geography. Demography. Linguistic Affiliation. Faroese is a syntactically conservative west Scandinavian language most closely related to Icelandic and the western dialects of Norwegian, from which it apparently began to diverge significantly after the Reformation while resisting assimilation to Danish. Reduced to writing in 1846 and redeployed for modern use since the late nineteenth century, it is a primary symbol of national identity, spoken and written by all Faroese. Faroese are fluent in Danish and increasingly in English. Symbolism. (pilot whale slaughter), the old-fashioned garb sometimes worn on holidays, and the national bird, the oystercatcher.

Culture of the Faroe Islands
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Culture of the Faroe Islands has its roots in the Nordic culture. The Faroe Islands were long isolated from the main cultural phases and movements that swept across parts of Europe . This means that they have maintained a great part of their traditional culture. The language spoken is Faroese . It is one of three insular Scandinavian languages descended from the Old Norse language spoken in Scandinavia in the Viking Age , the others being Icelandic and the extinct Norn , which is thought to have been mutually intelligible with Faroese. Until the 15th century, Faroese had a similar orthography to Icelandic and Norwegian , but after the Reformation 1538, the ruling Danes outlawed its use in schools, churches and official documents. This maintained a rich spoken tradition, but for 300 years the language was not written down. This means that all poems and stories were handed down orally. These works were split into the following divisions: sagnir (historical)

CULTURE
Faroese cultural life includes theatre, dance, classical music and choral singing, and most notably painting.
Samuel Joensen-Mikines (1906-1979) was the first artist to become known outside the islands with his expressive paintings of for instance pilot whale hunting.
The most prominent figure of the last fifty years is probably Ingálvur av Reyni (b.1920), who works with semi-abstract motifs and often on a large scale.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Faroe - Culture Climate You're unlikely to get a sunburn in the Faroes, where rain occurs on an average of 280 days a year and average temperatures range from 40 F ( 4 C) in January to 52 ( 11 C) in July.
When to visit
Summer is the best time to visit the Faroes, since the weather is more likely to be pleasant and the islands' small tourist industry doesn't gear up for visitors until May.
What to bring
A water-resistant jacket or rain parka, sweater, and sturdy shoes are the most vital items in a Faroes travel wardrobe. A tweed hat is more useful than a baseball cap or straw boater, and a folding umbrella is also worth bringing along. Don't worry about mapsyou can buy what you need in Trshavn.
Reaching the Faroes
Smyril Line has weekly sailings to Trshavn from Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and the Shetland Islands. Air service is available from Copenhagen and Billund (Denmark), Reykjavik (Iceland), and Glasgow-Aberdeen (Scotland). See the "Transportation" links in this article for more information. Some guidebooks mention ferries from Scrabster or Aberdeen. Unfortunately, these are no longer in serviceat least, not at the time of this writing.
