Geography of Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of seventeen inhabited and one uninhabited island, plus a few small islands that are also not inhabited. Most of the islands have elongated shape. The islands are situated in Northern Europe, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea, halfway between Norway and Iceland. The country spreads over 1399 square kilometres and has no land boundaries with other countries and lacks major rivers and lakes, however its coastline is 1117 kilometres long mostly bordered by cliffs. The coast is indented with fjords and the narrow passages between the islands are characterized by strong currents. The Faroe Islands are dominated by basalt lava that was part of the Thulean Plateau that was formed during the Palaeogene period. The islands are rocky and rugged, with some low peaks, the highest of which being 882 meters high. Some of the areas are below sea level. The climate on the Faroe Islands is characterized with cool, dump summers of 9-10 degrees and mild, long winters of 3-4 degrees. The islands have frequent fogs and strong winds, and more than 260 rainy days a year. The role of the Gulf Stream is important here as well, like in central Europe. Here we should also mention the role of the North Atlantic Drift and the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. The natural resources in the Faroe Islands include fish and whales, hydropower and possible deposits of gas and petroleum.
