80s Fashion Fads
In the fashion world, almost everything is recycled. That hot fresh style you've latched onto most likely isn't new - it just traced its way back to a store near you. Guess which epoch is making a massive comeback for spring and summer this year? The trendy 80s! By Mansi Chitranshi Many recall 80's as a great time. The advent of MTV reformed fashion and the music business completely. The fashion of 1980's reflected the philosophies of those who were trying to discover themselves. They searched for modes to convey their imagination and identity. Fashion sure has a circular motion and it revolves back with time. Jelly sandals, bright sunglasses and glares casual attire - It's all coming back with some modifications. Some of the 80s fashions may make you flinch now, but let's confront the fact - the color surplus, layering, and more-is-better fashion mantra of 1980's undeniably reflected a cool attitude. Let's take a look at some of the fun and fascinating fashion trends from this era, and how some of them are re-emerging in modern apparel. Padded Shoulders
Believe it or not, in the 1980s it was considered strikingly stunning for ladies to look like soccer players! Regardless of the age, females wore jackets, sweaters, and even T-shirts with sewn-in shoulder pads expanding their structure. Some experts elaborate on the fact that the 1980s was a period when women were starting to really affirm themselves in the place of work as a justification for this "broad -shouldered" style.

Right, so we talked about the Ganguro look, the Japanese fad of the ’90s. The look that replaced it is called the Gothic Lolita style, sometimes called LoliGoth.

    Gothic Lolita
Posted on May 11th, 2008 at 9:44 pm by Japan Fan Gothic Lolita style, sometimes called Loli-Goth. Teenage girls mostly dress in the Loli-Goth style. The idea of the look is to wear frilly clothes that mimic the look of a Victorian era doll. (Because everyone would like to be an emotionless porcelain doll that collects dust.) Gothic Lolita has been around for a while, but it first picked up with the entrance of visual bands in Japan So what does the Loli-Goth look, look like? Well they usually wear black clothes with white accents. They wear skirts which are usually knee length and have a petticoat to give them more volume. Trim, lace and ribbon are used as accents for the entire outfit. Then they wear over knee stockings or black tights, and black shoes. These shoes usually have one strap and have thick heels. (

[Photo by Timothy D. Sofranko] Every era has its trends, and those who buck them. Today, when it comes to fashion, many Colgate students are conventional, says Elisa Benson '06, a Maroon-News columnist. "The general Colgate student is well-dressed and brand name-oriented." Many follow a 21st-century interpretation of the early 1980s clean-cut "preppy" look, with popular items being Lacoste shirts, pearl earrings, flowered Vera Bradley bags, khakis, and puffy ski vests. Yet, to be sure, not everyone "pops their collar" on campus. As San Francisco native Tiffany Chu '07 observed: "When I first came here, I was like, `Why is everyone wearing their grandmother's jewelry and using their grandmother's bag?' My friends and I have more urban wear." Wearing long, dangly earrings and men's ties as belts or hair ties are also popular items with female students. And in a scan of students traipsing the stairs alongside Little Hall, the occasional head of purple hair will pop out. "Also, everyone has so much pride in Colgate, we wear a ton of Colgate attire. I was hanging out with some friends this summer and they wanted to know why I had so much Colgate stuff," Chu remarked. In fact, 47 percent of students asked own one popular item: a belt with the Colgate seal woven into it.

      Members Only Jacket
Created in 1975 it wasn't until 1981 that Members Only jackets became one of the earliest modes in an era whose styles were constantly changing. The waist length zip-up jackets designed specifically for guys had thin material made from either polyester and cotton or leather and had various amenities such as front pockets, elastic waistband and cuffs, a snap-up button at the collar, shoulder straps and a front pocket located on the front left side with the label Members Only stitched in underneath it. There were also a wide range of colors to choose from. Unlike other fads which were geared toward the younger crowd guys of all ages wore Members Only jackets. As with anything sought-after there were look-alike versions which cost less and had a similar style with a tag of their name on the front left side, yet if you got close enough you'd see that it wasn't a Members Only jacket but rather a cheaper imitation of the real thing which just wasn't the same. Their motto was simply, "When You Put It On... Something Happens." What happened was that by 1985 the look had all but disappeared as Members Only jackets were no longer in fashion. Every now and then you'll see somebody wearing an original Members Only jacket which may bring feelings of nostalgia to you or possibly someone else.
