What do children need from their fathers? (review)
Cynthia Milligan and Alan Dowie (1998)
Centre for Theology and Public Issues, The University of Edinburgh; 1998; 79 pps (A5); 9.95 pounds sterling
This is a fascinating report of the views of children and adults about how children perceive their fathers and what they want from them.
This qualitative research, whilst lacking something in the presentation, warrants being taken seriously. It flags up important issues which need to be considered for further research and the report has wide implications for those involved in the formulation of policies connected with parenting and the family and provides a better understanding of the role of fathers. The report also contains a review of recent literature on the subject and there are many poignant quotations from those who took part in the study.
The project, which was funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, was inspired by the International Year of the Family and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

We suggest you write a Letter to the Editor of the Columbus Dispatch Kee writes: Senate Bill 292, recently introduced by Ohio Sens. Shirley A. Smith, D-Cleveland, and Bill Seitz, R-Cincinnati, would drastically raise Ohio child-support obligations. In an environment of high unemployment, falling housing prices, rising local taxes and tight credit, this bill could have a devastating effect for many Ohio parents.

A Call For Data Points
I was recently contacted by a prof at the University of Texas, who asked if I might help him with a study he is doing about Stay at Home Dads. I agreed. So if you're a SAHD, you might want to follow the link here or over there on the side to the study questionnaire.
Its basically a series of questions about your attitudes towards various aspects of life, work, and family, with an emphasis on things that would apply to our particular situation. The survey doesn't ask anything that struck me as terribly outre', and no personal information is taken, so in my view there are no privacy concerns.
Let's give this guy some data! Posted by Jammer at 8:55 PM 5 comments Links to this post Labels: sahd

Um, Hello, there
Well, it has been a while. There comes a point in every blog's life, some sooner, some later, when you to decide if this is still fun or a chore. For my part, I always wanted this to be more than an on-line diary. But the simple truth is, as I wrote once before (I forget when and I'm too lazy to try and find it), that as time went by and this strange "new" life became simply "my life", new insights to pass on came further and further apart, and all there was to talk about was doorbells, and school hijinks, and the best way to make a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich.
Woof, that was a long sentence.

Standing on the shoulders of giantesses
Ever since I was slated to speak published BlogHerloper In 2008 , when I took the stage three times that important Naturally, some women think that the men are intruding. (One actually lamented that there would be "too much penis" at the conference. Really? That's how you wanted to headline your anti-man-ifesto? Eyes up here, lady!) This only goes to prove that Mom 2.0 isn't extending us this opportunity as some sort of altruistic pity party. Mom 2.0 is a business that is part of a larger business, and both want to grow. That some people are already distressed by what they perceive is a drastic change—which it decidedly isn’t—tells you how great a reputation the conference has earned after only two years. And that the 2.0verlords would risk their hard-earned emotional capital in order to try something new speaks to their bravery and entrepeneurship. jazzed November 10, 2010 in

That's it. Stopping time for real
Marge hasn't seen much action this year. Or last. Or any of the last 20 years.
But after she served admirably as the mobile bar for my birthday in July and again as the bar for our annual Halloween festivities, I realized that this pony needs to be put out of her misery.
Coming up (hopefully soon), an over haul of brakes all around and front suspension. Then we will have to deal with the myriad transmission and engine issues.
When I went to drive Marge back into the garage after Halloween, at least one of the brake drums is seized up. A neighbor and his buddy helped get Marge back in her garage stall and until parts are replaced, she will be staying there. Posted by Mike at 8:30 AM 2 comments

13 months? Really?
Just so you know, I AM still alive and Marge is still in the garage. In fact, I needed to hide from the heat today, so Marge loaned me her tailgate for a nice shady seat. Still, I can't believe it has been more than a year since I updated this blog.
Not much has changed with the old girl. This year we have been a little tight on $, so Marge was the first project to get sent to the back burner. Hopefully, with a new job on the horizon, that will be changing in the fall. Of course, once I am working I won't have any time to hang out with Marge, but at least I hope to stockpile some parts.

Two years ago, when we elected Barack Obama, lots of people were celebrating on Twitter. Talking about the change that was coming. The historical significance. Or the fact that their party was now in charge.
There was also a group of people bitching about the decision. Telling Obama's supporters that they'll live to regret the decision. That this would mark the downfall of America. That McCain was the better candidate. In short, being petty assholes and sore losers.
