he people of the FSM are culturally and linguistically Micronesian, with a small number of Polynesians living primarily on Nukuoro and Kapingamarangi atolls of Pohnpei State. The influence of European and Japanese contacts is also seen. It can be said that each of the four States exhibits its own distinct culture and tradition, but there are also common cultural and economic bonds that are centuries old. For example, cultural similarities are evidenced in the importance of the traditional extended family and clan systems found on each island. Although united as a country, the people are actually a heterogeneous mixture with different customs and traditions bound together by recent history and common aspirations. The cultural diversity is typified by the existence of eight major indigenous languages, and its peoples continue to maintain strong traditions, folklore and legends. The four states of the FSM are separated by large expanses of water. Prior to Western contact, this isolation led to the development of unique traditions, customs and language on each of the islands.

Identification. Formed in 1978, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is an island nation in the Caroline archipelago of the western Pacific Ocean. Between 1947 and 1986, these islands were administered by the United States as part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The United Nations trusteeship was terminated in 1986, when the FSM and the United States entered into a Compact of Free Association that guaranteed financial assistance to the FSM in exchange for U.S. authority over matters of security and defense through the year 2000. Communities throughout the FSM are culturally and linguistically heterogeneous. A shared national identity has been important for economic and political negotiations with outsiders, but sociocultural diversity within the FSM is more often the hallmark of islander identity. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Loadmaster prepares to give the drop signal. WC-130 of the 54th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron out of Guam, circles around for the next drop. Dec '86 Operation Christmas Drop is a tradition that serves as a training mission for the United States Air Force which started in . Then, the aircrew of a WB-29 aircraft assigned to the 54th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, formerly assigned to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam , was flying a mission to the south of Guam over the Micronesian atoll of Kapingamarangi . When they saw the islanders waving to them, the crew quickly gathered some items they had on the plane, placed them in a container with a parachute attached and dropped the cargo as they circled again. Today the tradition is continued with the donations from the residents and businesses of Guam . Each box dropped from a C-130 aircraft weighs nearly 400 pounds and contains items such as fishing nets, construction materials, powdered milk, canned goods, rice, coolers, clothing, shoes, toys and school supplies. Operation Christmas Drop is a team effort, bringing together volunteers from across Andersen AFB, including the 734th Air Mobility Squadron, crews and aircraft from the 36th Airlift Squadron at

Chuuk is one of the four states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia and is located just 7° north of the equator at 152° East Longitude, in the Caroline Islands of the Pacific Ocean. Chuuk is made up of 19 "high" islands inside the lagoon, 10 atolls, and 225 "low" coralline islands . Together, the total land area of all islands in Chuuk is 49 sq. miles.
The high islands are merely the peaks of volcanic mountains and together they make up the most heavily populated islands in Chuuk comprising 56 sq. miles of land. They are spread out among the lagoon which is 39 miles in diameter, encompassing an area of 1,320 sq. miles. The high islands contain very fertile lands and are home to many native trees and plants including breadfruit, coconuts, mango, banana, and taro. This, along with the abundant fish and marine life allowed the Chuukese people to enjoy sustainable subsistence lifestyle. Climate:
Language:

The Chuukese language is part of the Austronesian linguistic group and is spoken by nearly all residents of the islands of Chuuk. In addition, there are three different dialects commonly spoken in the central region of Chuuk. However, even those who speak another dialect can understand each other. English is the common language among all residents in the Federated States of Micronesia.

General Information
Land of Stone Money
Known as the Mysterious Isles of Stone Money, Yap is perhaps the most traditional of all the Micronesian Islands. Stone Money is still used today as a means of exchange in Yap. While these huge disks rarely move location ownership will change through marriage or according to other traditions. They were quarried in Palau hundreds of years ago and brought in open outrigger canoes to Yap. Their value is determined by the peril of the voyage not by the actual size. Kept in Stone Money Banks the people of Yap know who owns each piece and the story behind it.
People of Yap
The people of Yap are warm and friendly, but tend to be a little shy. As a sign of respect younger people will wait for their elders to initiate a conversation and the same holds true for visitors. Just wave and say hello and you will be answered with a warm smile and friendly attitude. Traditional dress is common in Yap. When you step off the plane men wearing thuus and women in colorful hibiscus skirts will greet you. Toplessness is common in Yap but women are required to cover their thighs, so please ladies no short shorts in town. Men carry woven baskets since the thuu has no pockets for their beetle nut and other essential items.
